duraspark 2 on 68 200

I have a 68 200 in my falcon, i recently aquired a 1978 200. can i put the dizzy straight on to the 68 block or is there some mods that have to be done? ive heard of some guys having problems with the older 200's and the duraspark

8) the only issues are if the block is the early one, then there might be an issue with the guide hole being too small. being as your 68 is the later block you will have no issue with that. the second issue is that the vacuum signal for the load o matic distributor is different that the one for the later dual advance distributors, and i believe that 68 was the first year for the dual advance distributors so you have no issues there either. the later distributor will drop in just like your current one.

8) by the way, my advice is to use a chrysler ignition box when you install your system. the wiring is easy, i have the diagram if you want it just shoot me an email. i recommend the street performance box, it is painted orange. the box and harness are available from summit racing and your local chrysler dealer(assuming it hasnt been shut down).

so theres more to this swap than just the dizzy? what else has to be done? im looking on the board right now but if theres a simple quick answer thats cool too

There is quite a bit more to be done. You need to wire in a "spark box" and by-pass the resistor wire. Some have gotten away without doing the resistor wire. Do a search and you'll find the info. Don't worry, the spark box, blue strain relief is only $20-$30 and I'm not sure about the Mopar box.

rbohm, curious about that, why do you suggest that box?

8) because the chrysler box uses a large transistor to handle the heat generated by the electronics in the ignition box, and it is more reliable overall than the ford box. also the wiring harness for the box is available new and easy to find.

Good stuff!

I haven't done it (yet) but that type module supposedly can be triggered with breaker points. I have used a Ford TFI module triggered by breaker points as outlined on www.gofastforless.com and it does work well.

I didn't need to by-pass the resistor wire. When I did it fried 2 coils, voltage regulator, and battery. Wired mine up exactly like it was stock and haven't had a problem. I don't think the wiring diagram people have is completely correct.

what year engine and what year dizzy?

I have a 67 200 and used either a 78 or 79 distributor from a granada. It was about $200+ cheaper buying everything from autozone and o'riellys than the kit from CI.

Mine worked that way as well. I by-passed the wire eventually for ha-ha's  Tell me I have too much time on my hands!

How'd you handle the vacuum? I assume you had a load-o-matic on that 67 originally.

Yes I did, but the vacuum on it never worked so I took it off. Then ran the HW5200 carb with that until I could do the DSII swap. The 5200 uses vacuum advance so it works out.

cool because i have the 68 and my newer 200 is a 79. so all you did was hook it up like stock>?

Correct just left all the wires the same and then wired up the distributor to the module and coil.

1973 was furst year for the Duraspark ignition.

1976 was first year for Duraspark II. Was used til 1984 when TFI showed up.

So all 200 and 250 I6's 1976 and later should have Duraspark II.
