Exhaust Bolt Kit

I need new bolts for my new manifold. I defenitely don't want to use the old ones, cause they are pretty rusty, and one cracked pretty easily. I was thinking of going to the hardware store and getting some grade 8 bolts, but I'm wondering, should I just get some from a mustang shop around here? They run just over $20 I think.

Also, on my block, the TOP far LEFT (closest to firewall) the threaded hole where the exhaust bolt screws in, is busted off.

It's like it should be an "o" for the bolt to go into, but instead, it's a "u"

Any ideas? Will it affect it that much?

That busted ear is a common problem. The only tested and true fixes are metal welded or brazed in there; this has to be done with the head off. Stuff like JB weld will not work.

I think a couple of people have made a little L bracket of 3/36" stock, and secured it to the port top with another screw first. Then the manifold bolt mounts into the new L bracket.

Use anti-seize on all the manifold bolt threads, regardless of your chosen fix..

I have been told not to use something as hard as a grade 8 bolt on things like exhaust manifolds because they dont stretch properly for heating and cooling so they will either stress things or loosen up. I did it on a chebby one time and it worked out because to get the proper length I used several lock washers which I guess made it work. On my 200 I just bought a bolt set and they came with special spring/lock washers that I am told compensate for the heating and cooling and have a notch in them to keep the bolt from spinning when they are in the loose state. I was very supprised how tight they seemed when I had to remove them to do some work on the motor.

These are the ones I bought and based on how well they worked so far would look for them again for all my motors.

I don't know about welding it on there. Yea, it would hold it, but I will be doing a lot to this engine in the future, including possibly putting some of those headers on there.

What about, maybe, welding a big nut on there, or something. Not sure if that will even weld.

Yes, you could also weld a nut there.

some people will tell you that you can't weld to cast iron, but that is only because THEY can't weld to cast iron.

If you're that worried about it, then replace the head and be done with it.

lol...

Maybe I could get one of those fancy Aluminum heads that Mike is making :P

That will come way down the road. But I see your point. I bet by the time I am ready for those headers, I'd want a new head anyways :)

Thanks guys for the help :)
