Exhausted on exhaust choices

I have been trying to figure out what kind of muffler I want to put on my 66 inline 200. I was thinking Smitty pipes but still unsure. Can anyone recommend a slim muffler? I want to have the exhaust come out in front of the rear tires and also I might have a spare manifold around and will probably do a split manifold and go duel exhaust. I know I can get the header but I want the car to be old school. I want a rough sounding exhaust but not too loud.

Its hard to say exactly what sound you will get with the stock manifold. Headers make the tone smoother and more throaty. The hushpower two from flowmaster doesnt look to bad if your confined to small runnel space to exit by the tire. Turbo mufflers give a nice idle and cruise wil a good bang when you give it gas.

I can only describe ny own experience:

THe '61 Comet has a 250 with radical engine work including 272 Cam. I'm using Smithy 31"'s set behind the collectors and dumping out ahead of rear wheels.

On the Daily Driver mild 170 - '63 Wagon, I use NAPA generic small cans with JC Whitless "Turbo Mufflers" as resonators.

The mild 170 daily driver '63 with NAPA mufflers was metallic raspy at iidle and the wagon body "drummed" with side exit exhaust in front of wheels. I added the resonators and turn downs but am still not happy with it. I wanted to be as quiet as a dual header would allow for daily driving.

The Smithy's on the 272 Cam 250 with short turn outs sounds great. They cackle at idle without raspiness and sound open - but without the edge - rather than baffled under power. I don't think I'd want them for a daily driver without rear exits or resonators .

BTW - Both setups use standard NAPA pre-bents at @ $5 each a bend and standard 2" tube. Hangars are @ $2 each - NO BILLET here - strictly old school cheap shi#...

YES!!!! The first few pics is exactly how I plan on doing it. The elbow bends are pretty cheap. I seen some nice exhaust tips in a catalog too for side exit. There are other mufflers out there that are nice but you pay for the name mostly. Unless someone else chimes in, I will go with the Smitty's.
