Gentlemen,
I have a modified 250/6 in my '65 Falcon. It now has a Mallory dual piont dist. I want to improve the ignition without spending a lot. I've been seeing a lot of the MSD ignition control unites (#5 & #6A) in local cars. Do these units work or are they just a gimmic. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Hotrod Bill

Hotrod,

They work. I'm using a Duraspark II with the MSD 6A. It gets better gas mileage, has more umph, better cold starts, smooth all through the rpm range, and got rid of a mid range miss I had forever.

In addition to Bob's comments, I remember seeing dyno tests on a bunch of different ignition add-on modules. The MSD 6 and Crane Hi-6 were the only ones producing measurable power output benefits on a dyno, all other aspects of the vehicle's tuning remaining the same.

I think with the MSD you would only use one set of points to trigger it.

Regards, Adam.

I just installed a Mallory dual point with a centrifical advance and a Mallory hyfire ignition. less money than the MSD and seems to work very well. Only issue I had was hooking up the tach. Their instructions are a little rough.

The replys above are all good advice. If your budget is really tight, check out www.gofastforless.com. They have several really good low-budget upgrades, plus it is interesting to learn different ideas. I recently helped a friend upgrade a breaker-point ignition using the Ford TFI coil and ignition module, triggered by breaker points. We spent less than $10 at the junkyard for parts. Works great!
