I love my car, and i trust it. But the last two days have been pushing me. See, i drove it from nebraska to washington 2 weeks ago. Had some issues, no big deals, i dealt with it and all. Got here and loved the drive and would do it again. In fact i need to go on another road trip, down to college with my stang in southern california. I already dedicated myself to it and two days ago it craps out on me and won't start. I get out and my battery cables are smoking, i cleaned and retightened them. Tryed again, now the starter relay is smoking. I take off the air filter while i'm at it just checking the carb and all, lift the throttle linkage, gas shoots at me, one of my gaskets has a pin hole leak but puts out alot of gas when ever you lift the throttle. So i got it started that day and drove some, being careful never to pump gas much. So today i go and check on it, still leaks some, but not as bad, the gasket expanded some cause it was dry before. Go to start it and it fights for awhile then starts. I stop at gas station to get gas and it wouldn't restart and i was late for a hair cut appointment. I get done with that, thinking it might be battery bye then and just getting tired of it, i jump it and get it home. I put charger on it and got no reading. Unhooked battery and checked with voltemeter, full charge. So i get new starter relay, install it, still nothing. I forgot to tell you the engine locked up a couple times and i had to wiggle it lose by hand. So by this time i'm getting pretty angry cause i have 8 hours to fix it before i leave. I decide to pull starter and the wires were in need of some care, but nothing major. Finally get the starter off (top right bolt was a pain to get too) pull it and parts just fall. The top bushing stayed in the engine and the washers were just free playing on starter shaft and shavings were all over. I fished out bushing and rotated engine a couple full times backwards and looked it over and accounted for all starter parts. That was one of the worst starters i have ever seen and i've done alot of starters. The top end was completely shot and and the shaft could just wiggle in it. Went to store, got new starter, installed it and it's never started that easy. So i've been fighting with bad starts for a couple years now because of something as stupid as a worn starter. Guess it just goes to show you taht if you don't know how something normally works, you can't tell if there's something wrong. So tom. i head to So. California, i'll tell you guys about it when i get to campus and set up.
