Four or Seven?

I was perusing the Falcon 6 cylinder Performance Handbook site and noticed that the Falcon 6 page states that the post '66 170 has SEVEN main bearings. I presumed all 144/170's had four mains. Maybe it's time to RTM !. I have a '71 Maverick 170 I presumed was a 4 mainer.

Year C.I. Code H.P. Torque Bore/Stroke Comp.
1965 170 U 105@4400 156@2400 3.50/2.94 9.1:1
200 T 120@4400 190@2400 3.68/3.13 9.2:1
170 has four main bearings in 1965.
170 has seven main bearings in 1966 up.
200 has seven main bearings in 1965 up.

Have fun and keep your tie out of the fan - PB

I believe that's correct. A 170 seven main crank in a 200 block makes a 188. Food for thought?

Think at that level the increase in displacemen is more desirable than a longer rod. i'd look to see what I could do about sticking the 200 in the 170- if it wasn't just as easy to stab the whole 200 in place the 170

Back to the issue please, - Is it true that the 170's all have 7 main bearings after 1966?. I thought all 170's were 4 mainers and only the 200's were seven. This opens up some performance possibilities for my Maverick 170 I have if confirmed.

It seems logical to me that all Ford sixes would have become 7 mains in 65 when they started making 200's with 7 mains. I mean, why make two different blocks? It's my guess that your 170 would have 7 mains, although, I don't know for sure.

Hi Guys,

We believe that all Mavericks that have 170's have seven main bearings, BUT...

Falcons seem to be a big questions mark, as do Mustangs.

Ford used the "empty parts bin" method of making changes - instead of a definite date. When a given assembly plant ran out of four main 170's, they switiched. So a plant with a low demand for 170 engines, could be sticking them in well passed 1966.

The Maverick 170's I've measured were all 7 mains. BUT... (don't you just hate big butts.) That doesn't mean that the next one I pull apart won't be a leftover 4 main.

Good Luck

Thats a very good point. So, the answer is: Drop the pan and look.
