Front Oil Seal Grease Question

It's time again for one of my novice questions-
I am ready to assemble my 78 Fairmont 200 block and the directions in the manual for installation of the front oil seal say to"coat the new seal with grease and install the seal." What kind of grease should I use? And do I coat the surface of the seal that contacts the cylinder front cover, or the inner portion of the seal that surrounds the end of the crankshaft?
Thanks-

How long until you use the motor?

If straight away, smear the lip of your seal with engine oil. Similarly oil the balancer snout when installing. You can put the seal into the timing cover dry (on the outer diameter).

If waiting a while, either moly grease or assembly lube instead.

With either, make sure the lubricant is spread well, covers the seal running surface fully and that the seal is centred.

Regards, Adam.

back in the day we found that it helps to grease the inside of the seal where the tension spring is this keeps it from poping out when you hammer it in
