front rocker pedestal

had the head off my 200 c.i. for machine work for a valve job. now I'm having one of those "I can't remember moments" - I took the rocker arm ass'y to the machinist to be cleaned and hot tanked but yesterday when I was reassembling everything I thought I was missing a tab that goes on the top of the #1 pedestal to cover the oiling hole that drips to the dizzy gear. Am I remembering this wrong? and what happens if I omit it? thx

I can't answer your question but I thought I'd remind you that the pedestals are aluminum, and will not enjoy being hot-tanked.

oops, i'm pretty sure the guys at the machine shop wouldnt' have done that, I was assuming that's how they cleaned it up. thx tho.

I think that hot tanking ain't like the old days using the super alkaline products like oakite or whatever. Tt seems that it's more of a hot detergent wash nowadays.

Shoot, machine shops can't hardly get away with using kitty litter to clean their floors anymore, that's hazardous waste.

Make one from sheet metal stock. That is the mounting surface for #1 rocker stand bolt. Bill

You mean, something that looks like this?

its not, my machinist was said its pretty much hot soap or degreaser. i filled a big clear sterlite container with purple power, sealed it up and set it in the sun for a couple days. worked great.

Azcoupe - that's it, called the machine shop and one of the guys said he did think they had something like that from the degreaser, supposed to call back. could you give me pic from on top? I can't tell if there's a hole to the right of the bolt hole. thank you.

The only hole is where the 3/8 rocker stand bolt goes through. The indentation on the distributor side is to keep the cover from rotating when tightened. Bill

thanks everyone. will have this buttoned up tomorrow and running - 3 angle valve job, back cut intakes, milled to 40cc combustion chambers, new guides, new exhaust seats, new valves. should perk this guy right up. kind of sorry I'm selling it. did a complete steering and suspension replacement, steering box, 2 inch exhaust, freshened up the C4, brake job, DUI dizzy, pony carbs 1101, etc etc. all it needs now is some body work (been working on a 65 Barracuda for 4 years, the mustang was supposed to be a daily driver. found out last Nov that I was having a recurrence of cancer and decided to cut back on projects. and i can't sell a car knowing there's something wrong with it, thus the valve job).

I have actually seen three different pedestals used for the #1 stand.
a) One without any provision for oil, like all the other pedestals.
b) One that has an oval cap, which has a hole in the cap to seep oil. Like the one in the pic above.
c) And one that has an oval cap, which does not have a hole to seep oil. Instead the oil runs down thru a small channel which is cast on the side of the pedestal.

So, depending one which pedestal you have, the cap may or may not have a second hole in it. Unfortunately that's the only picture I have that shows the cap. I'll see if I can dig thru the cores I have, and take pics of the three different types of pedestals. But I won't be able to do it until this weekend.

AZ - Thx but don't bother sorting thru cores. Worst case I'll make one out of sheet metal. best case the machinist will have it at the counter when I show up today. thanks everyone.
