Gas Gusher. Weird. Help!

I just got done taking a walk and was walking past my car on the way home and noticed the smell of gas. So I look down and there is a fairly good sized puddle of gas that had leaked out of the gas filler neck hole. I'm looking at it as it is literally gushing out! Not very much pressure behind it, but as if it had been overfilled and was running over. I took off the gas cap and looked down the neck and saw that the level of gas was indeed rising above the filler rim. I had filled her with gas the night before but NOT to full. I specifically checked the filler nozzle to see the if the level of gas was that high. What the heck is going on? I find this wildly bizarre. :

Alright. I just went outside and was looking at her again, and gave the car a little shake and gas literally exploded out of the filler neck and got all over me. There was quite a bit of pressure behind it. Then the fuel level was down below the view of the filler neck. What gives?

Replaced the gas cap lately? Check to see if it's a vented type. Your tank isn't venting, and as the gas heats up during the day, it has nowhere to go.

Had the same problem on an old MGB after I replaced the tank and lost the venting system - I'd get gas, park the car, and it'd start pushing gas out past the cap, and when you removed the cap, it'd spew gas. The MGB had a non-venting gas cap, so I solved that problem by drilling a very small hole in the gas cap, where it wasn't visible from the outside.

There is probably an area in the tank above the filler neck that had trapped a pocket of air (especially if the filler is on the downhill side of the tank the way the car is parked) and you shook the air bubble loose, and as it went up the neck it pushed some gas out with the bubble of air.

I solved that problem by drilling a very small hole in the gas cap, where it wasn't visible from the outside.

Important tip For the mechanically challenged...Remove gas cap from car before drilling....

On the off chance that your car is now making it's own gasoline, be sure and keep track of the mileage..

LOL. Well, I'll try drilling my gas cap, but my tank is vented. It's a new tank as well and I've never had (or even heard of) this problem before. Let's hope it's just some freak incident.

You mentioned that you have a "vented" gas tank. Have you run a wire through the "vent" tube to verify that it is operational? Possibly "blow" air pressure through it with an air compressor.

i had a car it had a bees in the vent tube . did the same thing .
