I purchased the Victor Head Gasket from NAPA and was just wondering if I need to use any type of sealer with the gasket or if I can install the gasket without any sealer.

I am using the Chilton Book and Ford Six Performance Handbook for instructions on installing the rebuilt head. Does anybody have more detailed instructions on installing the head? I have never done it and Chilton is rather brief.

Thanks

Howdy back Burghstang:

No, you don't need any sealer on the NAPA head gasket.

Our Falcon Performance Handbook is designed to be used in conjunction with an appropiate Shop Manual or/and a knowledgeable mechanic. You will find Shop Manuals listed by year and vehicle. They are available from from several sources for about $50.00.

Best of luck.

I just replaced the head on my maverick over christmas... worked fine but the increased compression has caused one of my rods to start knockin.. looks like i'll need to do the bottom-end now too..

have you removed the old head yet? basically remove the carb, linkage, valve cover,

Definitely take off the rocker arms and pull out the pushrods before trying to take the head off, make sure and mark the holes they cam outta, and put them back in the same ones when you reinstall head or get new ones

I found it easier to unhook the manifold from the pipe and pull it off with the head rather than to unbolt it from the head in the car.

unbolt the head and lift her off..

make sure surfaces are clean and straight before you put it back on

When your ready to install it, head studs are handy if your trying to do it yourself to line it up, but its best to have someone give you a hand anyway..

make sure you torque well, preferrably a three stage method, starting from the center and spiral outward. torque to like 30, then 55, then about 72 or so...

hope that helps, not really instructions, but a bunch of advice.. I'm assuming you have some basic automotive repair knowledge, if not definitely get someone to help you out..

Before you stat removing any bolts make sure you have drained the engine of all coolant.

Thanks for the help. I have already removed the head and had it rebuilt. They also cleaned up my rocker arm and pushrods. I had the pushrods in cardboard to make sure they went back in the same holes, but when they cleaned them up, they just put them all in one bag. Is this going to be a major problem? All the pushrods look the same to me. I am going to put he head and headers on this week.

Thanks again.

Keeping track of the pushrods is not really neccessary. They generally don't have a certain wear pattern like lifters would have with the cam. I wouldn't sweat it.

If you've lost their order, just throw a dab of assembly lube on each end along with the valve stem tips. Follow a "cam break-in lite" regime of running at steady revs for a few minutes, then adjusting the tappets again.

Adam.
