HW 5200 Whistles Like Crazy...

Fired it up tonight- whistles in a high pitch very loudly, with and without the air cleaner assembly attached. I retightened all the carb mounting studs, adapter bolts, all the hoses, and all the clamps and the sound persists. However is seems to run OK and I have not adjusted it yet.

It's too late for me to play with it in the driveway (Hello Neighbors!) tonight.

Any suggestions about where to investigate? Seems to me to be a vacuuum leak by the sound of it. I'm thinking of spraying carb cleaner around all the fittings and listenin for a RPM increase.

Other thoughts?

Thanks!

Sounds like you have a vacumn leak, check for missing screws on carb, and check vacumn lines on engine making sure there all there and in good shape. You can use a two foot pice of water hose to locate the noise, just put the hose to your ear and pass the end of the hose over all supected spots of the source. Good luck!

For diagnostic use, do you have any idea what tune it's whistling?.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

The "other brand" adaptor I'm using had to have a few added gaskets between the adaptor and manifold so the long studs wouldn't hit the carb body and prevent proper sealing. Also the bottom of the H/W has a few vacuum path "lands" so checking for leak as you indicated sounds like a good idea.

I'm also working out the kinks on a H/W 5200 2Bbl conversion. I have not solved the bog and stumble if I go WOT under @ 2800 RPM. If I bring it above @ 2800 and then open it up it winds toward 5000 RPM real fast.

I've put together a series of pictures on jet replacement I hope to make a Tech article with at:

Note in the photo how the stovebolt adapter doesn't seem to fit flush on the carb spacer -- I had to carve out a notch in my stovebolt adapter to get it to do so. Otherwise, big problems.

Then again, I also have the "bog" at WOT and lower RPM's. Seems a mystery to all . . .

Thanks for all the suggestions!
Will post pics soon.
Still working out the details of the throttle linkage but I've patched together some old fittings to make it work. The Clifford adapter really is a beautiful component- I went with it because it's height is less than the stovebolt + the original PCV base plate, and clearance is an issue with the 250 (2 inches taller deck than a 200) and a 63 Comet hood. Even with this I had to fabricate a dropped air cleaner base plate, etc.
Once I track down the whistling I'll be able to get this baby on the road again!

I ordered the clifford piece today for the same reason you cite. Let us know if you're able to avoid the bogging down that so many discuss, and if so, what you did to prevent it.

The old "put the hose to your ear" trick worked- there was a vacuum leak between the Clifford adapter and the carb base. I removed the skinny paper gasket and used the 1/4 inch composite gasket that came with the rebuild kit and the whistle is gone.
Here's the carb with the thicker gasket:

There is a small black arrow at the source of the squeal.
Here'e the air cleaner:

Here's the recessed base plate (cut and hammered):

And here is the selection of mounting screws- I used a shortened bolt (lower right) instead of a wingnut since hood clearance is a serious problem with the 250 and the 5200 + adapter, using the bolt saves me 1/8 inch

Thanks for all the help!

Could we see a good picture from the back side of the carb with the air cleaner removed to see how you hooked up your cable linkage?

I don't want to hijack this fine discussion but here's a picture of the linkage on the '61 Comet with the DFAV - H/W5200 on. I am using a Maverick cable throttle and after removing the original YF one barel . I simply had to "form" (bend) the cable bracket down to meet the clockwise rotation with the ball stud below the throttle plate, as opposed to the YF with the counterclockwise rotation with the stud ball above the throttle plates.

I had a discussion with Tom Langdon wher I got the parts, and asked him if he intentionally sent the exact linkage setup on the rebuilt H/W 5200 I needed and he said it was just luck. He said there are many different DFAV/H/W 5200's linkage configurations. I believe he said this is the Pinto style and there is a mirror image one used on the Chevees and a reverse rotation setup on the Chrysler applications (1.7L Omni/Horizon).

I believe the Chrysler app' uses a straight electric choke which can be used in lieu of the water system. Also a few aftermarket carb vendors selling on E-Pay sell an elec. conversion for @ $20.

Damm!!, I edited the pics on Photobucket to reduce size and now they're all gone except for one!. How'd that happen??.

My throttle linkage is a little different from Powerband's:
HW5200linkage.JPG

I have a rear mounted cable bracket and put togerther several pieces of steel plate (2 inch brackets and fasteners from the local hardware store) to get the cable to line up correctly. Seems to work fine. I put a throttle return spring in front of the carb attached to the tranny modulator vacuum tube.
Good Luck!

A little off topic but...I'm getting ready to swap out my Autolite 1100 for a Weber 32/36 DGEV. It's very similar to the Holley 5200. I ordered a Stovebolt adaptor and while talking to Tom on the phone, he convinced me to also buy an air cleaner adapter he had. He didn't have a photo on his website but it was only $10 so I ordered it. Well, the ridge around the opening on my Weber is rectangular where the Holly is a diamond shape so it won't work for me. Otherwise it seems pretty nice and I would use it if I could. I've attached a photo of it. If anyone's interested in giving it a try, I just want to get my $10 back plus $3 for shipping.

I found one that will work for me from K&N http://knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=85-1061 but it's a little expensive at $80. There's another at Carbs Unlimited http://www.carburetion.com/Weber/weberpartsair.asp that should work for only $27 so I think I'll order it.

Wow! I think the adapter is going to Marc. He sent me a PM. Maybe he will give it a review when he gets it installed.
