Alright, I finally got all the bugs worked out. The new head and carb are in and working well. Advancing the timing has made an big difference. Now i'm getting greedy and want more power

Today I spent some time walking around the local Pep Boys and found a universal high performance 12v coil for around 40 bucks. I guess it is something like the flame thrower coil and a lightweight flex fan which is supposed to give better cooling and increase HP. Think I'll notice any power gain from these easy changes?

Anything else thats easy that I may be missing? My next major mod is fordsix headers to dual exhaust and high flow mufflers. Just looking for little things in the meantime!

A better fan will free up a little more power, maybe a horse or two, but probably not enough to notice. An electric fan would give you 6-8 hp (when not running).

Cold air is good. The open element air filter you crafted is sucking in hot air from the engine compartment. You could gain a couple of horses by getting a closed cleaner and ducting it to pick up cooler air.

Howdy Again Spyke:

I doubt that you'll notice an increase in performance by adding a hotter coil. I don't recall what distributor you have, but the hot coil may improve cold starts, higher rpm and idle and will allow you to open you plug gap a bit for a fatter spark. You could do that with your stock coil, though. How do your plugs look?

Jack suggestion of a cold air, air cleaner system is a keeper. While you're in the recycle yard looking at air cleaners systems to adapt to your engine check out the variety of thermostatically controlled electric fans. What carb are you working with?

And if you haven't already checked your carb linkage to be sure you are getting full throttle when you put it to the floor that should be next.

Air up your tire pressure to the max, empty the unnecessary junk you are carrying around in the car and save your money for the header.

Adios, David

Any cars better then others when it comes to the fan? Where will the stat be located on the donor car and then on the stang? I assume it is just 12v and I could wire it back to the battery or something?

BTW I am running a carter yf off a late 60's 170 with a 1.5 bore and duraspark II. I plan on changing to a 1.75 bore yf off a 250 sometime in the future, but I am really inpressed with this little carb so far.

It depends is a 50,000V coil?

IIRC the stock coil is about 10,000 volts. I think a Duraspark II coil was rated at 50,000V.

The high voltage coil should allow you to run a wider gap which might help your gas mileage.

Now if you add that Hipo coil to a spark box like a MSD-6 then yes I think you could pick up a few HP.

As Jack said a electric thermostatic fan is the best bet if you want to free up a few HP. The flex fan wont free very much up. I had one on my 79 Capri with a 302 and I could not tell a difference other than it ran cooler.

I would deffinately go with a new coil, I would get the Pertronix Flame Thrower coil (the 45,000 volt coil) for about $30-$40. I really does make a difference - the next thing would be to spend $59.99 on the Pertronix breakerless ignition, the reasons? = Better, faster, more reliable starting, A Lot smoother running, better exceleration, permanantly replaces your points and your condenser (Never change points again), etc. Plus, if you do put the coil on without converting to electronic, after a while (maybe up to a year even, but it will happen!) you'll completely fry your points (throwing 45,000 volts at 12V points just doesn't work out very well!)
I have done both of these things and am Very pleased
