ok well this basic service has been a nightmare!! i have finally decide not to let any of my mates 'try' and help out!! i thought changing ignition leads would be a simple enough task for most people.... however, not my mate!!! arrgh....

does anyone know the easiest way for me to get my leads into the right places on the distributor cap??

i always start from the sside closest the motor (ie nuimber 6 i think) and point the tabs to the front and work around clockwise. i put hi tension on last its just the easiest way ive found to do it. ps i do this with the dizzy cap on.

deer! ..... dont mind me... i think i might have had too much to drink!..... i was pretty sure that the dizzy cap was meant to be numbered, however i was positive when i looked there were no numbers! and thats y i asked this question to begin with.... however when i actually looked properly there were numbers! im jusst blind

LOL!
I was gonna say that the pionts should be numbered cos it happened to me with my XF a while ago, only I had my mechanic come over to take a look... and he found the numbers!

thats just the firing order, it doesnt indicate where to plug the leads in the cap tho.

On the XE and earlier electronic, there is a little line scribed on the top edge of the dizzy body (the lip the cap sits on) that is supposed to line up with the rotor firing #1. There is a matching scribe in the tip of the rotor; line the two up and whatever the balancer reads is your initial timing. I have done this and been ½° off perfect.

COOL!!!
I don't have a timing light, so I have to do it statically. Of course on my old Peugeot there is no mark on the balancer, you stick a little rod through the bellhousing into the flywheel and do the timing with a test light.

Matt,
For your information.
The distributor has a little line where number one spark plug lead should be attached to the distributor cap.
The work out the distributor rotation.
This should be clockwise when looking at it.
Then fit the leads in the firing order.
153624.
Crank the engine and see if it starts or backfires.
If it starts, Done!
If no start then start the hard work.
Distributor and ignition timing.
