Installed Tach, more questions

I recently installed a tach on my 66 200. I was wondering what the redline is on these cars and what a good shift point for my mini shift light would be. Also, I have an 11k tach in right now, looks good but needle BARELY moves, lol, didnt realize till Ide already bid for it. I was wondering what a good rpm tach would be to try and get ot replace it. Im thinkin a 6K or 8K. I can find a good 8K but not a 6K. Any ideas on where to get one. I dont want a monster tach, it sits on my steering column.

8k RPM would be a decent one. I'd personally would go 6k.

As far as shift point, generally you want to shift just past max HP so that when you shift, you don't drop too much HP. Dyno would be the best way to figure it out.

Hi 66sprint6,

I agree a 6k tach would be best bet. However, like you say , a 6k is hard to find. As for size, check JCWhitney. Thay have a couple of good small tachs available for about $27.

Shift point. The stock 66 200 makes maxs HP at 4000rpm, assuming its well tuned. A shift at 4000 - 4200 should product the best results. Beyond that you have run out of carb and cam. HP will fall fast after 4000.

Thanx for the info,
I have a couple mods including head ported and polished/valve job, Holley 2300 carb, Dual out headers to 50 series Flows, K&N ram air, and duraspark electronic ignition soon to be coupled with a MSD 6AL. Should I sill look around the 4k mark for shift points. Also....

When I get the MSD 6AL, what should I do as far as rev limiting etc. Is the MSD an easy swap for the stock module?
Matt

Try shifting around the 4000-4500 range....You can feel when the power starts to fall off. Remember the rpm level then shift a couple of hundred rpms under that.

I am using Auto Meter guages in my car. I am using the (I think it is) 2300 model. It is an 8k RPM tach. It works just fine. The 2302 and the 2309 models have shift lights. These have to be the easiest guages to hook up, something like 3 or 4 wires. The tach is very responsive, with out any flat spots that I have seen so far. I haven't reved the motor past 4K RPMs yet. This guage is mountable on the steering column or below the dash.
If you have an 11K RPM tach and the needle is barely moving, is it at all possible that it is not wired properly? Could it be a loose wire?

Matt,

I am using a Summit 0-8000 tach with a shift light in my 'chero. I have it mounted to one of the rear screws for the radio grille just like the sprint tachs from days of old.

Having the shift light really reminds you when to shift without having to really look at the tach. I like it

Then I can set the red-line at 7500 to impress the dudes like the dorks in the Dodge hemi ads. (is the message of tthose ads that only dorks buy Dodge Hemis? but I digress)

Howdy again,

The Summit tach is part number SUM G2905. Price is $36.95 (yup, about a third of the others) It has a 3 3/8 in face and is switchable between 4-6-8 cylinders. It is 0-8000, black face - white digits.

I am using it with a DuraSpark II. My son has one with a points dizzy.

You can find summit online at http://www.summitracing.com/ Just type in the part # in the search.

Good Luck

Hot 6t Falcon,

Could you elaborate on how you mounted that or show a pic. I'm wanting to mount a tach and vacuum guage in the middle of the dash. Wondering how you handled the curvature of the mount and if I can get a matching vacuum guage w pod.

Thanks,
Don

i am still toying with the idea of sticking the tach in the clock delete place.....

That's what I did in my '68, I got a cheapo Sunpro tach in there it's 2 5/8" size so it fits just about right... you do have to cut out a bit of the plastic and grind out some of the metal behind the bezel, but it does fit well.

I'm probably gonna change it to an Auto-Meter eventually, they made a 2 5/8" tach, but it's like $75! The Sunpro was like $25-30.... but I got that like 8 years ago...

do you have any pictures?

do it now and I will buy the old one off of ya!!!

:)

I'll try to get a pic tomorrow for ya... it is kinda stealthy in there, unless you're looking for it you wouldn't see it...

I'd like to change it over now but the Mustang stuff has kinda been on hold until I get my Ranchero goin'... otherwise I would consider that offer! :)

For those of you who give a hoot, here's the one I was thinking of replacing the Sunpro with...

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... 3708&N=120 305797

The one I have now is similar to the one you were talking about Chaz, onlt it says 'Sunpro' on it, I guess they don't make they anymore like that. It's all black, no chrome bezel

Yours is 2 5/8" compared to 3 3/8" of the SUM G2905. That's good for me as I think I can get a vacuum guage the same size to match. Also it looks like it'll be easier to mount to the speaker screw, my skill level's not so great. Only negative is it's twice the price, but that's par for me. Sure wiah they made a 6000 that looks as good. They list the ATM-2893 as a
6000 but the picture shows an 8.
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... 0%20305787

of course it's even more...

I guess they don't 'move' quite as many of the smaller Auto-Meters compared to the 5" Monster Tachs and such, thus the price... All those dumb ricers mounting a 5" tach on their dash or 'a' pillar. What always cracks me up is... I know factory tachs aren't known for their accuracy or movement or anything, but why do they put a 5" tach on there when some of those cars have factory tachs! Unless for the benefit of a shift light of course... still makes you wonder... I guess it goes with the rest of the 'look at me' 'bling-bling' sticker and wings and crap.

Well, being that this post was originally mine, lol, and I forgot about it, I have since switched my tach to a Sunpro tack with 8k instead of 11k. I like it, but I switched my gauges to Autometer ultralites (silver face) and I am now searching for a good silver faced tach. I dont like the 8K they have that sweeps from like 5 oclock to 2 oclock, I want one that sweeps left to right instead, you know. I have found a monster tach that sweeps like that, and reads 8k, but its a little big and alot pricey, lol. I might go with it anyways, because shift lights are VERY good things. I love my sunpro tach tho, so I might stick to it for a while. If you go to my site, you can see the old autogage one and how its mounted on the steering column

Not to thread-jack any further.. (sorry Matt!), but here's the pic for Chaz...

Please pardon the dust and glare, hehe

Oh and yes, I painted the whole bezel black, that chrome on the plastic wore down to a dull gray and it looked like crap... at the time I didn't have the time or $$ to get a new one, so I just painted all black... I will replace it when I re-do the interior..
