Lifter removal

Ok im new to ford 6's so be nice. I tried to get the lifters out of the 221 last night but no luck, whats the trick here :). I doubt they have ever been removed before as its a virgin engine. I tried to carefully lever them out with a flat blade but the oil tarnish wont allow it. Im sure its easy if you know how.. Craig

flat tappet lifters can be a royal pain in the backside to remove for a couple of reasons;

1: the varnish build up at the bottom inch of the lifter

2: the lifter tends to "mushroom" over time. anytime you are putting both rotating and downward pressure on a flat surface you will get mushrooming where the bottom expands a bit and that will also create removal issues. bad enough sometimes where the only way to get them out is to remove the cam and push the lifters out the bottom much like a ford flathead lifter.

I used a very strong magnet and i moved the lifter up and down vigorously until it was free. i have also grabbed the retaining clip of the lifter with needle nose pliers and spun them out.

The best thing is the little magnet stirer used in laboratories.

There is a little plumbers block, which expands as you turn the ineer piece, sort of like a stent.

The No 1 and 12 are blind holes at the top, but if you've got slave labour, you can make 8 year old kids with small hands put them in. They can stand in the engine bay without scratching the extractors, they don't have knee or back problems, and don't want free beer after giving a 110% effort. Best results come from little smart mouths whos dads drive Holdens

"Dad dad dad, I put lifters in Daves Ford and its gonna kick your cars ar$e when its finshed...!"
