I have a 1974 maverick with the stock 200. Anyone have experience with these hooker headers? http://www.jegs.com/i/Hooker+Headers/520/6601/10002/-1 Anyone know how well they perform against the CI header? Also if I remember correctly the timing chain was retarted in I think '72. Does anyone know where I can order a new pre-emissions timing chain? Or do I have to track one down in a junkyard? Thanks

Howdy Rusty:

I don't have any first hand experience with Hooker headers for our engines, but all things being equal, I'd suggest that you do business with our web site host. Also, I recommend that you have whatever you get coated. They are too expensive to just let them rust out in a few years.

ON the timing chain, all years of 200 are the same in a stock type replacement. CI has an adjustable timing set. I believe it is also a double roller type. The cam timing of 200 cams is in the cam itself. The change came in the very late 70s and early 80s engines. A '74 200 cam timing should be straight up with 252 degrees of duration on the intake and 256 on the exhaust side. Lift is .348" at the valves. While the specs look respectable the profile is very lazy.

The timing gear was used to change the cam bias on 250 engines at the 1973 model year.

I hope that's what you needed.

Adios, David

hooker vs CI,

the hooker has a fuarther travel before the collectors, thus making the header quite longer, due to the length you have to install from under the car, disconnecting your steering linkage, which you "might" have to go in for an alignment afterwards, this also looks to be in 2 pieces, I can see a head ache when you relieze the other one should've been installed first.

the CI header is one peice, and it's very easy to install from the top, meaning less hasselign from under the car, time wise for installation wheighs in favor of the CI. on top of that, Mike asked his shop to design the "ball and socket" type connection, it made my installation really easy.

Also, I'm not positive but recently I heard hooker headers on a 250 and I wasn't impressed with the sound, my 200 sounded "beefier" with the CI header, also mike does a great job on availible coats, I recomend getting it coated also so that it helps longevity and reduces your under hood temp.

I might be biased on this but that's because of my experience with CI, never had any with hooker but just looking at them raises questions how easy it will be.

Timing chains go for the double roller, it makes future changes so much easier.

I am surprised the Hooker 6601 144/170/200 Headers are listed as available!. The 6601's as illustrated are true long tube dual outs with 2-1/2" collectors. They swedge fit the two pieces at the #4 pipe. I run a set on a '63 Falcon with a Maverick 170 mild performance/mpg setup. Definitely solid quality on the old set i gotf on E-BAy but that's some $... . They fit pretty good in the '63 /170 DD with only minor interference but do hang \ low.

'wonder if the Hooker (Holley) 6602's are available. I have a set of these that were Maverick 250 application and the only pair I've ever seen. These have different bends and carefully cup around the OEM starter past the SBF V8 bellhousing. {A later PMGR SBF (stang) starter fits with more clearance}, The 6602's may fit Maverick 250 but the 250 in the '61 was tons of fun. Thanks to the Scheldahl (sp) bros Falcon Six Performance handbook recc's, I "flipped" the center steering link and clearanced the shock tower, firewall, steering idler, tranny mount, crossmember and they fit pretty good.

Holley / Hooker sells and "installation kit" with nice gasket, header bolts and port divider - 6601 gaskets part #10827HKR

For the price Jegs is asking for the Hooker, you could purchase a ceramic coated steel header from CI and pocket $80, or get a stainless steel one.

Your choice.
