More cooling issues...

Ok guys, I know that there is some of these discussions already around right now but I am really mad at my car. The other day, i was driving on the freeway and hit traffic, wooa! The needle on my VDO guage went from around 200 to past 250!!!!!! Not good so i decided to take a break and let it cool down. Well today, I rebuilt the entire cooling system including, new hoses, alumnium water pump, thermostat, and new coolent with water wetter. I also checked the radiator for plugging but there was good flow through it. Also the temp. around here was 105 so that wasn't helping any but i have driven in that kind of temperature before with little or no problems. Well it still likes to over heat, according to the guage. My uncle and I put a meat thermometer in the radiator and it said 163. What is the deal? Could the sending unit for the guage be bad or is the guage just out of wack?

This kind of stuff really ticks me off!!!!!

8) try replacing the sending unit, they tend to go bad. also the ivr maybe going bad. are any of the other gauges reading weird??
 
If you do have a 160 degree thermostat in it, then I would move to the sending unit first (they are known for going bad, they are cheap, and they are easy to change!), then, if that doesn't work, you could look at the IVR and the gauge itself.

Curiosity question: Does it overheat when you are driving or just when you stop (like in a traffic jam)?
 
The IVR is behind the dash gauge panel.

You said the meat therm. said 163 degrees? Is this when your gauge is reading in the 200+ range? If one reads 163 and the other reads 200+ well there is your problem. :) Make sure the VDO gauge you have works with your stock sender. I would try a VDO sender. They usually come with adaptors.
 
Try this. I have been told this is a hill billy repair and that it is just covering a issue. But I was told this procedure by two different engineers. Ford systems seem to like to develope steam pockets. If you take a 160 degree t-stat and drill a small. maybe 1/8" hole in the flange you will allow any steam to vent off easier. If you look close most all t-stats have a small v notch in the vernatherm portion of the t-stat to help vent steam. so you are just giving it a better path to follow. Of course you should make sure your cooling system is in good working order which it sounds like yours is. Also be sure to check or replace your radiator cap.
 
Yes, that is true, you drill a 1/8" hole in the thermostat for an air bleed. But, what it is for is so when you change your antifreeze an air pocket wont form.

I think that I am going to try to replace the sending unit with a VDO compliant one. Next, there is supposed to be a voltage regulator for an aftermarket guage? I think that I just have it wired directly to a 12V switched source. If I need a IRV for these, which one should i use and how do i wire it up to the VDO guages?

:shock: Is there an aluminum version for our cars????? Is it better than the cast iron one????? If so where can I get one?????

I got mine from Kragen and asked for one off of a 67 200 w/ ac. Napa didn't have this one. Just the cast iron ones.

They are supposed to have a higher flow rate than the stockers but that just might me an idea?
