motor identification falcon non crossflow six

Orinally my 72XA had a 250HC motor this was confirmed by the letter L on the ID plate. However I've had 2 other motors the last being from a wrecker.I thought it was a 250HC.Without the original ID plate how can I positively know which engine it is e.g. 200,250,high or low compression? Can amotor be rebuilt to retain high compression and run on Aust98oct fuel by only fitting hardened valve seats and valves?

Couple of quick answers.
Can you distinguish between 200/250 without opening up, only by pulling a spark plug and checking how far piston goes down to BDC,
as far as compression ratio, without pulling the head and checking piston top, NO.
As to unleaded on older precrossflow with high comp. NO, youd need to be down into the 8.5:1 to be safe in my view, why dont you consider fitting an alloy head 250 into your XA?
