I have very little experience with turbochargers and I hope one of you guys can help.

Can a T04/03 class turbo be mounted upside down - meaning the exhast flange facing up?...or is there something internal within the oiling system that is designed specifically for upright position? I understand that it is important to keep the tubine's axis of rotation parallel with the ground.

Yes...the axis should be parrallel, but you can spin the housings any way you wish, as long as the center scetion is upright for oiling puposes. thats on the T04 and T03. I dont know about some other turbos, but most of them are the same.

8) as long as the turbo axis is level with the ground, and you run the drain out the lower oil port, and the drain runs downhill from the port, then you should have no problems.

Thanks for the replies. I've got another question:

Does it make sense to attempt to mount the unit at the same height as the main oil gallery? This is on a 300 on the passenger side. Do you think the stock oil pump can handle the job on a turbo that uses both oil and water?...or would some type of external oiling sytem be a better? Anyone seen external systems? I like the external idea, it would be easier to keep it (the oil) very clean.
Cheers.

Basic rules:
1) The turbo MUST be higher than any point on the return line.
2) There can be no uphill runs of any kind or any length in the return line.
3) The return line must enter the engine above the oil level in the sump.

The best place to get your oil supply is to tee in behind the oil pressure sender fitting. The engine side cover is a convenient place to mount the return if the turbo id high enough to satisfy rule #2.

Mac Innes describes the oil coming out of the turbo as resambling 'black shaving cream," very, very frothy. You need to reduce back pressure in this line to an absolute minimum to keep the turbo properly lubed

8) the stock oil pump will handle the task of lubricating the turbo bearing quite nicely. as for using a water cooled turbo, go for it as it reduced the heat load on the oil.

how would i go about mounting a t4 turbo on a 200 ci with a stock autolite 1100
