mustang 200 ci timing "fence" question

trying to set timeing so that I get best mpg as you can understand,, mine ,, the "fence.gauge" goes from 6 degrees, which according to th book is where it should be for a manual tranny and no ac etc......the next pointer/notch is at 10 degress,, problem is the books/mauals I have don't jibe with what's physically there mark wise ,,, as ideas / sugestions like everyone else gas is killing me and want the max mpg,,, tires are at max,, pertronix II.. pertronix 40 k coil,,, plugs gaped at approx 35- 40 ,,idles and runs good

Don't worry about the books. Use what's there. Try 12 degrees BTDC. If it doesn't ping, be happy. If it does, bring it back a few degrees.

I got my best mileage at 8* BTDC. 12* got me slightly smoother idle and a little more power, but I lost about 1-2 MPG. Granted, I didn't test the 12* BTDC for more then a tank, but the 8* setting seems to be working nicely.

Try opening your plug gap up some. With that ignition set up, You should be able to run .050-055 with no problems. I know I did with the same set up.
