In the last 2 year's, my Maverick has undergone a set of changes, that has improved it's handeling, acceleration and driveability. My last mod was adding a 3.25 final drive ratio. My engine mods include a direct mount 2bbl, Holley ~300 cfm, header and rebuilt head. No major porting. I am interested in adding a MSD 6A, electric fan and what else to increase the fun, without taking apart the shortblock. The new engine will take care of that. (The new engine is a whole other subject and money).
Understand Nitrous, turbos and superchargers are out of the question.
Which fan do you suggest and is a MSD Digital unit better than a std MSD 6A? The car is a great driver, not a drag racer, maybe a Solo or track car.
Thanks,
Ken

I have a 6a in my boat and it is neat and does help in certain areas but Im glad I only paid $100 for it. To me it wouldnt be worth any more than that. I dont know anything about their digital systems. If they work like an EFI and run off a MAP sensor and you can program a 'map' into them I would go that route, if they are not that fancy I would save the money for your new motor.

Another thought depending on your future plans is something like a Megasquirt ECU. Some people use them just to control spark and do dataloging. You can do full EFI with them and they easily adapt for boosted motors and transmission control. They start as low as $150 if you can get away with the basic model and put it together yourself. The complete top of the line fully assembled ones are more in the $400+ range. May be worth some reading if you dont already know what they can do. They wont get you the multi spark capacitive discharge that the 6 box will but with the control you can get I think you can get more out of the motor and with the 6's pushing $200 its not much more money for a lot more function and tuning. There is a bit of a learning curve but IMHO its well worth it in the end.

Hey Ken, have you posted your question about which fan to run on the www.maverick.to site? You also may want to search that site as I'm pretty sure there have been discussions about this. One that I remember is that someone picked up a universal electric fan from AutoZone that worked out pretty good for his 6-cyl Maverick. I'm also wanting to install an electric fan but haven't decided yet what to get and what is best. Let us know what you end up with!

On the dizzy question, I switched from the OEM points distributor to the ClassicInlines DUI and I really like it. It fires right up and idles much smoother. Plus I picked 2 tenths in et at the drags. Not sure how that equates to hp gain, but I'm sure someone here could figure that out. Good luck! :D

8) i too owuld recommend the DUI ignition over the MSD. that way you eliminate all the wiring associated with the MSD unit. as for the fan question, pick up a fan from a late model ford taurus from a salvage yard(the electric fan). this fan pulls about 3500cfm of air, and coupled with an inexpensive fan control unit will really keep the engine cool. i do recommend using a quality 100amp relay to handle the fans start up current draw, and swapping to a 3G ford alternator(130amp output) at the same time. you can get the alternator from the same car you get the fan from, and ford, as well as others, have a conversion kit for the 3G swap, and it fits in place of the stock alternator.

With the DUI,where are the HP gains?Low end ?High end?is this not very expensive for a daily driver?I have thought about it myself but its a lot of money.Would you find that many gains for ordinary street driving.

Thanks

Thanks for all your responses.
I will be saving for the DUI setup. I will get it running on this engine, then put it on my freshened 250.
Thanks.
Gene, you have a great looking Mav.

If you're going to DUI I'd carefully consider getting the REV limiter too. Not because of the DUI but because it can save your engine, old or new. If you or anybody goes the MSD6 series route, yet it is better to take the 6AL that has the limiter right on it. At the edge of boost in power (alum head) it is good time to think some engine safety.

8) a rev limiter is not a bad idea. it is less necessary with the six than with a V8, but still a good idea.

sounds like a cool little maverick 8)

how did you like the gear swap? thats probably one of the next things on my list
