MYSTERY PIECES in BH ...

While installing a T5 onto a '71 170, I found these pieces rattling around when I removed the bell house to mate adapter. I did not remove clutch plate but everything looked intact and pilot was OK. Clutch worked with old 3 speeed and works OK with T5 but is slippy when hot. I was proofing the 5 Spd fit so not too concerned with clutch then.

Anyone venture to guess what they are :.

I'm suspicious a fairly serious vibration @ 1200 & less @2400.. RPM may be related...

I would pull the pressure plate and clutch and inspect them or at the very least visually look for other debris. Although they may or may not be clutch parts, other debris could still be lodged up in the pressure plate assembly.

I had a clutch plate come apart and I found pieces lodged in the pressure plate.

I reckon the main concern is whether the bits have come off presently installed parts!
 
Thanks for the responses, all valid "guesses".

Consensus leans to remnants of previous repair - TO, Pilot or starter bearings. I'm hoping for simple answer to harmonic vibration problem.

"66Fastback" got me thinking maybe more pieces lodged in clutch and I keep thinking of fulcrum finger mechanism...

I'll be replacing clutch soon and will hopefully get an answer...

TMc - Parts of a pressure plate finger? What do we win if we guess right ?

Right guess gets our respect and "cred" and I'll send you the pieces if you like..

Sorry, poor attempt at a little levity on my part :oops: ...I did not stop to think that pieces rolling around in my bh would not be funny at all. I misunderstood, and had hoped you already had it figured out and were quizzing us.

The round piece does seem to resemble a pp finger fulcrum...also kind of looks like a bh locator pin...my bad though
 
I agree that it could be a fulcrum bearing off of a pressure plate. I am not sure the throwout bearings use roller bearings. The one GM one that I had explode many years ago were ball bearings.

The top picture shows two holes that are partly broken out of the bell housing. If the mangled pieces are aluminum, there you are. If they are steel, its hard to believe that they could be smashed up as they are without some damage to something else. The cylindrical thing could be a locating dowel for the bell housing, a one way clutch roller from a starter drive, or a broken off end of a starter armature. If the last, maybe the other parts are part of the starter end housing in which case they would be aluminum. Check them out with a magnet.
 
my two cents, there is one that looks like an aligning dowel for installing the clutch.. the others could be also after being thrown around in the bell housing with the clutch at 3000RPM...
