I have a 1965 Mustang Coupe running a 200 ci Engine, and a C4 Automatic 3 speed transmission. It’s my daily driver, and I plan to keep it that way. The engine is pretty much stock besides that it has electronic ignition. Im looking to supe it up a little by adding dual exhaust headers. However, I have heard a lot about clearance issues with the original starter getting to close to the headers. I was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction for a ministarter, and would appreciate any guidance.

I saw a post that a 96 mustang v6 3.8L starter will work???? Not sure of the year. It has permanent magnets. It is not a gear reduction unit.

& I bet they'll fit w/o problem. No A/C or alternator in the way...
Get'em'n check. I went out'n got the stang starter'n returned it after the new motor. The headers fit fine.
Wasted money & time. C 1st, then decide, easy nuff.

I have a Clifford header with dual exhaust on my 200 and I’m still using the regular size starter in mine , it’s a tight fit but it works . I added a heat shield to it to help but so far so good.
 
yeah, wrap starter, not headers. Can shorten their life. Guess OP's done researchin starter/header interferance. Not here fora wk...
 
That is a nice daily driver to enjoy. If I ever get my Bronco close to being finished I will be getting an early Mustang.
What type of electronic ignition do you have?

Indeed it is, she just about never fails me. I’ve got a Pertronix ignitor that keeps her running strong.

Update: After some adjustments to the mini starter, it fit in perfectly, and is working like a charm (y)

P.S. Chad and rigstv, I‘d rather play it safe with this one and I was looking for a more powerful starter anyways. I appreciate your expertise regardless.
 
Did you get an FE starter for an Auto trans offset? They make one that's 3/8 inch starter drive depth and one with a 3/4 inch.
 
I got the 9606 Powermaster FE ministarter, and I had to rotate the starter away from the engine block a bit because it was rubbing against it. Gap wise, I took measurements of everything and without shimming, the starter was only 3 hundredths of an inch too far from the flywheel than what was recommended.
 
what's those 2 I remember Seth compairing in some pic a few yrs back? Can't find them in the Search. He found the least expensive option, had more room than the fancy names (or was DB Ele the 1 he chose?) Pic show 2 starters he hand held Up close to bells. I think these PowerMaster 175/200$ ones were bigger than the other he showed...
 
as "78" mentiones in another recient post on this it's a good starter. 300$ is out of my price range tho

In fact a main reasion I join these interwebs is to "hack" more durable, inexpensive, & performance (MPGs'n pep) mods than is available out there. "Our folks" know these inside tips. Example: I learned I could use '85 el derado rear calipers on my bronk if wanting to stay on-rd'n have a vehicel w/registerable/insurable E-brakes (wanted to stop picking mud, rocks out of the rear drums after use at my acreage). I saved athousand dollars over buying the system from "a typical vendor" (they just paint up a recycled 'kit') and kept an up-graded multi-purpose vehicle running. Sorry for the rant, I'd like to see the opposite more often (and do here @ ford6, "scarebird", nother break 'hack', seen on this site).

A stock 68+ 2" exhaust system will support all the horsepower that your 200 produces.
Watch a few YouTube 200 header install videos. Common remarks after installing a header are: "it's still slow" and "it's all bark no bite."
A 65 200 can be made to perform great with the original 1-3/4 exhaust system. I drove a 66 California emission Mustang 200 for 14 years. It ran great without any modifications. The ministarters place the solenoid close to the header pipe heat. Save your money for a Non-LOM distributor. Connect the vacuum advance to full vacuum. Don't spend hundreds of dollars to create new problems.
 
Good to hear you got your mini starter installed and working well. I got one for my Bronco and really enjoy how it works. Additionally, I'll bet it saved about ten lbs, or more over the stock starter. Do you have a copy of the Falcon Performance Handbook? It has information on varying levels of performance upgrades from mild to max.
