New Flathead Owner Questions

Sulfur..... that must have been the smell. My garage stank bad when I went in there this morning, guess from draining the trans. I threw some 80W90 gear oil in there that I had laying around just to have something in there. Once it's ready to be driving, I'll put some nice synthetic in it. I've been planing on taking the truck out and stripping/repainting the frame, but it's been so cold lately. It's not supposed to crack past the 60s for like a week or two :( It's 38 degrees right now in SUNNY FLORIDA!

If you remember from the first post, my tranny was stuck in a gear. Well, whoever stuck the cover on there last didn't bother to line up the shifter right so it got jammed. All is well now.

The rails-in-the-top-cover system is pretty simple. My old car gearbox had corrosion and burring on the rails, and wear in the spot recesses for the detent balls. Sounds as though someone took yours apart for a peek and didn't realign it. Was that the stuck motor's cause, also?

A person with experience might quantify the risk of letting the box sit with regular gear oil. I don't know how aggressive the stuff is on old bushings. My Singer gearbox stank because according to a couple of sources, the lube was whale oil based.

Although donuts have a fairly high oil content, they probably are also a little acidic to use as gear lube, so are best eaten rather than stuffed into an early BW unit. Joe might have left you a couple.

You want warm weather? It's too close to 100° for my liking here.

Cheers, Adam.
