I've switched to the Rotella multi-weight "diesel engine" oil for all my flat tappet cam engines (all the log sixes) but was looking for a straight weight (SAE20) for a blueprinted new engine startup.

I did purchase some SAE20 Valvoline and I called Ashland / Valvoline. The "product specialist" quickly explained that all the manufacturers are reducing zinc and other anti-wear additives and "although it should be fine, if you have a concern" to use the VR series of racing oils and/or the "premium Blue" diesel engine rated oils.

She also said the reduced additives can be determined by the "SM" classification on the newer stock. I guess I won't be using the SM 20 I bought...

I switched to Valvoline 20W50 racing oil because according to that magazine article, all the racing oils still have all the wear additives.

Doug

I plan to use the EOS, engine oil supplement from GM, hope that will be ok as an additive with any of the other oils as compared to shell rotella or valvoline racing oil??? Bill

8) using diesel rated oils are fine for now, but soon even they are going to have reduced amounts of zinc as they are also going to have catalytic converters installed to help meet future emission regulations.

That cinches it- once he get all this head development done Mike needs to start working on a roller cam conversion for our sixes!
