Newbie Intro and question about selling motor

Hi all, I wandered in from the ClassicBroncos.com message boards. Im the owner of a 71 bronco, originially with a 170, and Im rebuilding it from the ground up. Ive started making some mods to make it more driveable and with the added weight of the 4x4 Im afraid its going to be stretching the little 6 too far, so Im starting to think about going to a 302.

Now, on to my question. I have already rebuilt the 170 (bored 40, everything new or reconditioned.). It still has the carter YF and has less than 100 miles on it. Is selling this motor a viable option and what do you guys think is a reasonable price to ask?

Cheapest initial option is the "Suck it and see". It will really depend how you actually use the vehicle, and whether the motor measures up. You'll probably get the silent treatment on swap issues , but some thoughts on the 170:

Some rebuilds are OK, some indifferent. I have a theory that the age of these engines means many of the people working on them, are unfamiliar with the quirks of rebuilding. It can produce an expensive motor rebuilt by someone who missed some detail not documented in the manuals, and thus the motor lacks performance. Typical problems due this are overheating, bore issues and low power.

You may find someone with an earlier Falcon, 144 or 170 equipped, who just would like a newer motor (theirs being worn out). Not a performance oriented person, though.

If it's a seven main 170 someone may take it just for the crank, to build a 188.

If you do sell it to the first type buyer, be sure to "package" it with the clutch and bellhousing. This will eliminate any chance of people not having the right parts to make it work.

TO give you an idea of selling price...I got my 200 that was rebuilt for $50.
