Newer cyl head

Hi, i want to upgrade my daughter's 67 Mustang (200 I6) with a newer head before the original fails due to pre unleaded seats, etc. Would also like the larger intake manifold for reworking.

Found these at NAPA. Will any (preferrably non egr) of these bolt on and what do the casting #'s have to do with application, if any? - Thanks.

I would recomment either getting a D8 head or the E0 head. Remember you will also need a larger carb to go on it, or you could adapt a 2bbl.
 
Also, I don't know what napa is charging for those but I bet it is way too much. I would recommend scoring one from a junkyard and having it rebuilt.
 
$335. I have an old (but working) motorcraft 2bbl and plan on machining and adapting for it.

That is less than I expected - and actually not that horrible of a deal. If you live in the backwoods someplace where the cost of living is low, you might be able to beat that on a junkyard rebuild... but not in the silicon valley :)

Keep in mind that the heads from napa themselves are not new, just rebuilt. If you do plan on having one machined for a two barrel however I would recommend junkyard as you can do that first and make sure it works out before you get invested in the rebuild.

If you have your own machine tools, then just do whatever you are comfertable with :) Machining the head for a 2bbl with a mill shouldnt be too risky of an operation.

Jackfish, i'm retired and on SSI. Can't afford the alum one coming (boy it is a nice one), and the car is my 16 yr old daughter's. She's not a speed freak but does want a better runner.
 
If you can cut your own valve seats then you will be better off with the junkyard head. Otherwise, if you have to send it out to have the head rebuilt you will probably be best with the napa one.
 
make shure the head is actully available, when I went to napa for a E0 head a few months ago, they had a listing, and a price, but not available. same with Advance Auto, and Rock Auto. actully at first the guy from Advance Auto said that it would take 2-3 weeks for delivery but that he could get it ( pay in advance ) when I called back another person, said that there were none available. don't buy somthing that dosn't exist. I ordered a used cylinder head from www.dvap.com '78 250 head
 
If it's available, the first option is probably best. You'd just blank off any EGR provisions. It would assuredly have the largest stock valve set, too. Because of the interchanges listed for other models, you couldn't be sure of their sizings without checking specs not shown here.

All listings seem to have the larger carb opening, which makes blending into a 2V carb, more feasible.

Howdy Xlman and all:

Be sure to compensate for the differences in chamber volume in the new head and for the thicker head gaskets currently available. There are several related stickies at the top of this forum that will bring you up to speed. Most likely these rebuilt heads will have had some milling done already, but likely not enough to maintain stock Compression.

The mid to late 70's heads have induction hardened seats. Late 70's and 80's heads have inserts. The first digit in the casting code refers to the decade of the engineering change, the second figure refers to the year of the change. It is not unusual to see earlier castings on later year engines.

The E0 will have the largest intake tract volume. It will have an egr tap under the carb, on the outside of the log that will have to be covered.

Thanks. Really wanted to know the differences in the heads available. Now should the head be milled again to obtain original chamber volume and compensate for newer/thicker head gaskets?
 
The unfortunate answer there is, to "wait and see" as to what's under there at present. If you wanted to make an informed guess, milling to achieve 52cc would probably be it.

Many of the shop rebuilds are simply milled as an operation that ensures a true gasket face; beyond that is left to the specific situation and the user's inclinations. A 250 head for example, may dial in close to 60cc new and many are now on 56cc with a couple of skims in their history.

You could try Clearwater Cylinder. I have purchased 2 rebuilt heads from them. I put an EO on my 200ci Mustang for $250. They also milled it down for me at no extra cost. I talked to them about larger valves on the rebuild and they would do that at no extra cost, if I sent them the valves. They are easy to deal with and pretty helpful.

They ship fast and give you a return shipping label for UPS to take your old head back to them, if you want to save the core charge. They give you 30 days to get the core back before charging you the core charge.

get the EO head. you can use an off the shelf fuel pump blockoff for a 351M or 351C can't remember which (easy to tell...it will be long and skinny with holes on the ends)

best bet would be just buy it stock toss on a 2v adaptor and run it. once you start talking about adapting a direct mount it gets costly unless you can do the machining yourself. (pay $300 for a head and toss another $300 in it modding it and you will have ALOT in a head then)

I would only go for a direct mount if you can find a cheap core head from a yard (so you don't pay twice for rebuilding it)

, i machine myself and will measure chambers first.

My plan is to keep it pretty simple with a 2bbl, 6 into 2 headers and a duraspark.

My greatest thanks comes knowing the EO head is the one to use.

They have "improved" their website since I last looked. They used to have long list that included many more heads. I'd call 'em direct.
