OHC Heads

G'day all,

This AU Falcon motor came in for a rebuild on Monday. Turns out its a Tickford engine. So I grabbed a looky at the head before it had a chance to go through the sandblaster. After having a look at it, I laid it up on a bench next to a fully assembled EF head to note the differences. Very minimal to note, just a very subtle variation in combustion chamber shape, and a much larger combustion chamber. Granted, the EF head has been milled twice, but its that much larger. Probably to suit smaller dish pistons.

Good one!

The heads on all OHC Falcons follow the US/European CVH 1.9, 1.6, 1.3 Hemi heads used on the front drive Escorts. These were notoroiusly rough engines with excellent power potential.

Is see exactly the same canted hemi chamber. The Tickford XR6 head was gasflowed, and bluerpinted. A stock EF wasn't.

Hemi heads have a large, slow combustion process which makes them rougher but less prone to detonation. The latest double bump stick OHC has a very compact included angle between the valves, and is so much smoother.

The OHC Falcon got rid of the vibration ridden overhead valve block for a rough combustion process head. There is a nice 11mm space between each cylinder, the water cooling area is less on the AU, but way more than on the x-flow heads.

It looks like the bolt centre spacing is ohv Falcon.

:hmmm: The latest Falcon runs the same critical dimensions with a narrower simplex drive chain. With a Jack Collins style block modification, and a custom front cover like these ones,

I'm reviewing my old links for a book I'm writing....

you can do a Krogdahl style head conversion using 51 year old engine technology, Maggo!

hmm, its tempting, but it sounds like a whole lotta work.. Wouldn't mind starting out with an AU or BA engine. Apparently the BA cranks are the best of the lot, but won't retrofit into earlier blocks, according to the fellows at Applied Automotives. They've been doing some BA falcon six work, and its getting to be a really popular choice, especially since theres been a few standalone computers released for them..

Interesting. D'you think it'll end up as (comparatively) popular as the Ecotec swaps?

At this point in time, I don't think so. Just about the only think I can think of that'd benefit from an OHC or Barra182/240 is a Land Cruiser. 3F-E, 1HZ, etc etc can be a bit expensive to rebuild, but would cost about the same as a falcon six after various conversion engineering costs are factored in.. I guess EcoTec found its way into Hiluxes just the same as the 5.0 did.

People stuff red motors into old landies though. Maybe they'd go allright eith some better six in em..

I want one in the Transit van :D Wouldn't mind one in an XB Falcon either.
