Went and swapped out the 68 289 exaust valve springs for a set of 75 302 exaust valve springs as I was told that 73-75 302's were the same but 20 pounds heavier tension. Well, the 289 springs measured 2.00" which is what they are supposed to be....the 302 springs are shorter measuring 1.9" exact. almost 1/8 " shorter, thats a lot. why is this and is this ok?

Alrighty guys, 25 views and no-one can comment on this? I mean, I'm in no hurry but need to know these things. I have new push rods coming next week as well. Please tell me if these springs are the right ones for my 250!

Ronn,
When I was working in the machine shop, we didn't usually measure free length. Installed height and seat pressure were the two critical measurements that we checked.

It's very possible for a spring with a shorter free length to be sitffer.

Jack, you are right on the money. Just because they are shorter does not mean they have less tension at the compressed installed height.
Remember these springs have no damper inside the coils like a good aftermarket spring has. the damper stops harmonics. If you have already purchased them use them other wise step up to the next level & install springs with this feature. Make sure you have checked the installed height so you get full benifit from the stiffer springs. you will be pleased with the results. William
