A new member was discussing possible ignition upgrade with Pertronix for an early 170 with LOM ign. - Distrib.

info- feedback on the difference in Versions of the Pertronix appreciated ...

here' a good description of versions from reliable vendor

thanx

Not sure about 1963. Later sixes have a distributor that looks like the attached pic with two springs and solid shaft with flat, It would use the Pertronix 1266 Igniter. Assume your car is 12 volts, negative ground. dist1.jpg

6V or 12V - don't confuse the versions. Assuming 12-volt:

1261 is the Ignitor-I and is a points replacement conversion. It requires full 12V to the module, and separate resisted power (stock pink wire or ballast) to the coil, and stock or equivalent coil, for fresh-stock performance without maintenance. Proper wiring per the instructions uses a new wire added from the key switch before the pink wire, to the module. Spark energy and spark plug gaps are fresh-stock equivalent. No other changes or benefits to the LOM system, which must be operating and adjusted properly. Most common failure is improper wiring, attempting to wire the module power from the coil.

91261 is the Ignitor-II, which is everything the 1261 is, plus substantially higher spark energy. Requires direct 12V to both module and coil (bypassing pink wire or ballast, simplifying wiring) and a choice of new high-energy coil to get that power. There are other wiring options. Tends to improve idle, response, and allows tuning for better economy at cruise, versus stock or P-I. Spark energy and spark plug gap are greater. No other changes or benefits to LOM system, which must be operating and adjusted properly. Most common failure is improper wiring, or a loose or dirty surface contact from module to distributor plate, causing module overheating.

Hope that helps!
