Ping Ping Ping Ping Ping

Unhealthy engine, lots of advance. Healthy engine, less advance.

When you improve engine efficiency and chamber filling, you have to reduce the peak advance. Ping ping ping is good, you just need to limit the peak advance past 2500 rpm a few degrees.

A stock advance curve might have been 6 degrees at the crank, with about 38 to 40 degrees total from 2500 rpm. Anytime you improve the efficiency, you increase the amount of power from the engine, and the advance you were running needs to be pealed back. More powerfull, modified engines need less advance.

I'd try the FSPP or a reworkd Duraspark ignition, and get the ignition advance set up.

This is the second time I've read about a "loud ticking noise" with the DUI install. It's enough to get me slightly concerned that there may be an issue with some units. A leaky spark can make a loud tick, or there may be even a bushing/endplay problem. Certainly I'd be pulling the unit to check the driven gear.

Oil has been changed recently- usually change it once every one or two months.
Not sure if it would be the exhuast, I'll check it, but in my experiences exhuast leaks often make the car sound louder, not ticking.
The engine has about 10,000 miles on it. The new DUI is curved at 26' at 3000RPM I think- they're all the same curve for the 200.
I'm going to do a vacuum check tomorrow to see what that suggests.

Maybe too much initial mechanical advance? How much does yours have?
On the DSII distributor there is a cam plate with two slots, but I am not familiar with the points type.
10° cams are popular with the performance crowd.
Moot point since you have a DUI coming. :D

Took it out for more test drives- runs great, more power than I thought. Probably because I am used to my turbo-charged Passat with 5-speed that I thought the stang was gutless. But it does work well, and totally kicks a stock '67 200! (we have an orange one- see www.yellowkiwiracing.com).

It still does tick however, very loudly, with or without load too. Most noticeable on the highway in 3rd gear.
I will have to take off the headers and see if anything is blown.

It is amazing the difference the DUI has. I thought that pertronix would be as good as you get- DUI starts first crank every time even when cold with no choke!! Unbelievable!
