piston ring questions

i'm re-assembling my 200 and have two questions about the piston rings. the top pair of rings both have inside bevels, one with the bevel facing downward (as determined by the top mark on the ring) and the other facing upwards. the bevels should face away from each other on the piston, right?

second question, i had some (but very little) trouble getting one of the pistons in to the block. when i pulled it back out and went to readjust the ring compressor, i found that one of the hardened valve rings was broken. nothing about what i did during installation or insertion in to the block would have put much pressure on the ring. was this a faulty ring or did i do something wrong?

It could have had insufficient end-gap. Worth checking out, I'd say. Regarding ring positions, both compression rings should have a top side mark on them. Make sure they're all correctly indexed or "clocked" when being installed.

both piston rings have top marks, but one (#1) has a top mark with an up-facing inside bevel and the other (#2) has a top mark with a down-facing bevel. should i face the bevels away from each other (#1 at top of piston, #2 below) or towards each other (#2 at top of piston, #1 below). unfortunately, the little instruction sheet that came packaged with them didn't say anything on this...

thanks!

I opened a spare box of Sealed Power piston rings just to look at the instruction sheet for you. It says:

1. Install all rings marked "TOP", "T", or "o" with marked side toward top of piston.
2. Install all UNMARKED beveled rings with the bevel toward the top of the piston (there's a small picture showing ring 1 and ring 2 both installed with the bevel toward the top).
3. Install rings with a groove at lower O.D. corner of ring face with groove toward bottom of piston (there's a small picture showing a ring with a groove or notch cut off one of it's outside corners, the groove/notch is facing down)
4. Unidentified rings with no beveled edges or grooves may be installed with either side up.
5. Install bright faced (chorme or moly) compression ring(s) in top piston groove(s) if supplied.

There's a bunch more on how to properly intall the oil rings/expanders, but hopefully this is what you needed.

thanks scott and addo!

by the way, addo, you wouldn't happen to have a line on one of your famous australian heads would you? wouldn't mind looking in to how much one of those would cost to buy and ship to the states...

Sorry, no spare heads right now. They're around but with two options - the new version (upcoming) and whole crossflow motors, most people find reasons not to spend on the original ones.
