Plugged cat

I kinda figure somebody here has some experience in this. Anyways, I noticed the cat on my car is getting a dull red after driving for awhile (esp on interstate).

Anyways, what's the best route to go?

Replacement Cat = too much $$$

Driving a rod through the center
Replacing with a glass pack (resonator)
Replacing with a straight pipe
Beat ot it afew times with a hammer and knock everything loose 9my brother in law's suggestion)

You have testing in columbus? If so then the hollow it out fix is only tempary. Either way I would do that to prevent any extra damage to you engine. You would have to hit it very hard to knock things loose, then where is the loose stuff gonna go in the muffler? a standard tire iron with its flattened end works well for this.
You did have a muffler in the car didn't you? If not it is gonna be loud!
it will be louder with it gutted.

personally if it were on a newer car that required a cat I'd gut the cat and run a piece of exhaust pipe through an weld it in place so it actually bypasses the cat but looks as if it were still functunable.Just my opinion.Dunno if they test emissions down in columbus.Up here in this lil farm town they don't even wanna look at your car. It's like heres the money an they give you the new reg, tags an sticker.I know a few guys with trucks that run open headers an nobody says anything. Can't beat livin in a farm town.Everything's close an nobody cares :D

Summit and JC Whitney show a number of less restrictive cat. You can probably get one at the muffler shop in your area. I found that someone had welded a smaller one on my Jeep at some point and when the right one was installed it gave a noticable bump in performance. Get the right cat or get a low resistance one.

Columbus doesn't have emissions testing, so I can pretty much do whatever I want.

I just want to know the best route. My father in law told me to get the dimensions of the cat and have a muffler shop make me a straight pipe with a flange on one end to connect to the collector pipe. I just can't tell them what I'm using it for.

Ah,"Hello there" Said the Saw-Zaw to the cat,"nice day to die, isin't it?" You KNOW WHAT YA GOTTA DO,Tim.........   !! OO6.

Cat? what's that? when did they start putting cats in cars anyway... I thought most places had an age exemption to inspection? anyway's I live in Montana and straight pipes and open headers are the norm.. get a y-pipe with an open end and one going to the cat. open it up when you want performance, and close er up for inspection... summit sells these i believ

speaking of open headers and the likes.Anyone know how purple hornies glasspacks would sound on a dualout header? No exhaust system just the dual out header and the purple hornie GPs with the header flange?I might try that an see what I get.

If you've got no laws about it, I'd strip the cat and pipe in place, flanges and all, so you can still get the tranny out afterward.

Just so you know there is a federal law about a cat its like a $2000 fine

CAT?

when you open my hood all that's in there is a squirrel with a wheel and a belt drive!

I get real good nut mileage,

mike

Problem solved guys. I broke out the sawzall and had some fun with my parts car.

Anyways, the biggest issue is the inlet for the cat is 2 1/2" and the outlet is 2". So the next step is to slice off the inlet with the flange, get an adaptor that goes from 2 1/2 to 2. Then a 2 foot peice straight pipe. After all of that, I start trying to buddy up to somebody with atleast a stick welder to hook me up.

As for the $2000 fine. That may be true, but I highly doubt too many people are intrested in looking up under a 91 Mercury Topaz.

you should undo the smog (air) pump and the egr valve now because they arn`t doing much of any thing now

Well...I hate that annoying CE light. So I don't think so.
