Problem With My Valvetrain??

I purchased my roller tipped rockers several years ago in the group buy from the place in California (forgot the name) and lately I have noticed a strange noise coming from them. Kind of a whirring (sp) or whining noise above 3,000 rpm's

Is this normal??

Earlier this year I was getting a strange intermittent tapping noise from them at idle and I replaced my Clifford chrome moly pushrods with some stock ball & cup ones I had laying around. The cup part of the Cliffy pushrod was hitting the rocker arm and wore a groove in the rocker arm where it was running.

Anyone had any similar problems or any ideas/areas to look at??

The valves are adjusted correctly and they are getting plenty of oil.

Thanks,

Doug

Did you considder removing a little of the bowl rim so that there was clearance again? Course I'm spoiled by owing a metal lathe.

Gee, Doug, that's a bummer. :( My rockers are still in the box waiting for me to build another six. I have a C9 'M' head and haven't decided whether to do the 3x1 with NIB webers, or modify it for a 2v ala Schjeldahl's method.

I sure hope there's nothing wrong with the rocker setup and maybe it was something else, whatever it might be. Sorry, that's not much help is it? BTW, have you checked with Gary at Rocker Arm Specialties? I don't have his phone number anymore, but I'm sure you could get it off their website http://www.rockerarms.com/Rockerarms.com.htm.

Doug,

The group buy was from Gary at Rocker Arm Specialties. Since I sell these on my web site, I talk to Gary quite often. Seems there were some problems with the earlier sets he made up. Something about the adjuster not being of the correct hardness IIRC. If you give him a call, he will replace them with the correct ones for no charge. If you remember, a couple of other guys have had the same problem, but Gary stands behind his products 100%.

Kev,

Dont know...never thought of doing somthing like that to the pushrods?

Phil,

Hopefully Mike just answered my question

Mike,

Thanks very much!!! I just sent him a e-mail explainign the whole problem...we'll see what happens!! :D :D

Thanks,

Doug

Yeah, that was good info from Mike. Makes me wonder whether the ones I have are properly hardened??? Guess I should contact Gary too, I don't want to find out the same way you did.
