problems after plug change.....

I changed to the platnium plugs....taking the guy behind the counter's word for which one was right. Now I get black smoke when I accelerate hard in nuetral...

I pulled a plug and, while the tip looked correct color, there was a black sooty deposit around the rim. I tried to retard timing, thinking this mighthelp...which it didnt. Now I have my slight taping noise at idle again...

Reading in the ford shop manual...it says I
1) might have rtoo cold plugs
2) might have a defective fuel pump.

new pump is coming today (hurricane not included)...I guess I will pick up some plugs at same time

if I adjust the fuel/air mixture....I can make it worse or better
so I am going to change the fuel pump. start there...

and then change the plugs again...I think I got given the wrong ones

and then tune it up AGAIN

hey QUESTION...IF I TURN UP THE TIMMING, CAN I DECRESE THE SDMOKE FORM A TOO COLD PLUG?

Not sure. But I would think that by increaseing your timing you are allowing a long spark from the plug. This would (in theory) allow for a longer burn of the fuel/air mixture - cleaner burn.

Are you getting smoke?

Changing your ignition timing does not change how long your spark is. It changes when your spark occurs (in relation to the crank, in crankshaft degrees)

The amount of time the spark occurs is determined by how long the coil is being charged (dwell, amount of time the points are closed, or on electronic how long it is charging the coil)

I think it may be coincidence that you changed your plugs and now you have black smoke when you gun it in neutral (which really doesn't mean that much anyhow) What you are doing is dumping a bunch of gas in the motor, then letting go of the throttle the black smoke you see is unburnt gas. It probably doesn't happen when you're driving the car since the gas is being used to push the car under load.

It is possible if your timing is off (retarded) that the fuel mixture doesn't have enough time to burn in the chamber and is being spent out of the exhaust, but it would have to be off by a lot and since it ran OK before you changed the plugs I kinda doubt it, but it may be worth double-checking.

I don't think you have too cold of a plug, I can't remember what the stock application is, a 45 or 46 Autolite (or equivalent?) I know the V8's use a 45, which is a pretty cold plug to begin with, a 46 is one step hotter.. I don't think Autolite makes a plug colder than a 45 (could be wrong tho)

i was talking to the guy at the auto parts store and we figured I might have gapped the plugs too large at .050

I bought a new fuel pump....i was gonna do that anyway...so I will put that in and see...

since nothing else changed except the plugs, I am gonna regap and see what happens.

i also had messed with the timing and now I turned it back to where it was...

i will keep you updated AFTER this damn hurricane. I am so bored but cant go work on car...

Chaz, the spark plugs are not your problem, but just curoius what brand did you buy?
You have a rich fuel mixture problem. Run a fuel pressure check & see it is correct for your brand carburetor. Good luck william

Chaz, not this matters much but my YF was running rich as well. No matter what I try it would still run rich. Once you are able to get that 32/36, I think you will be much happer. However, now my plugs show they are running alittle lean. LOL as long as my engine starts fine and doesn't over heat, that's okay with me.

I bought bosch platninums...I am running a holley 1 bbl

Chaz, since your problem started after the bosch plug installation, put in accel #378, or autolite ap-46.
Give it a try,and adjust your idle fuel mixture to the lean side rather than the rich side. My personal opinion the only place i would put bosch plugs are in a trash can. Hope that helps :idea: william
