I'm saving up for some dual out headers and some sidepipes for my 66 mustang.

I'm in highschool and working two jobs to afford it, so my question is, is it a good idea?
The mustang is my only car, so basically a daily driver. I've heard stories of people complaining about exaust getting in the car through the windows..

And if i ran straight exaust, as in from the headers to the sidepipes with no muffler, would it be too loud?

I don't want to make a stupid teenage mistake, so thanks for the help

I think some of the side pipes have mufflers in the centre section. It shouldn't be too loud. Also, as long as the exhaust exits behind the doors (which it basically will), you'll normally have enough air movement to pull the fumes away. Idle situations are another issue, but that's one for you to determine. Your most enjoyable exercise will be the LH side connections...

I actually like these things, but they're too much "bait" here.

They were cool in the '70's, but it would still be cool to do your own thing 8)

The connection that goes from the headers to the beginning of the sidepipes, would that have to be custom fabricated?
How much do you think? 100 bucks?

So far, the headers~ $300 and the pipes ~$200..

The LH side has to come in front of the tranny inspection plate, to meet up reasonably with the pipes. The fabrication will be costly; certainly more than $100. Your best bet is to mock it up, mount the headers and side pipes and leave the connecting to the exhaust shop. They can use a selection of mandrel bends to make the system actually work as well as it looks.

I didn't say this, but you could probably run your car with straight headers to the muffler/exhaust place with just a couple of turndowns clamped on the ends.

Whatever they do to fit, make sure it's reasonably removable, as it will need to come partly out for tranny work.

Cheers, Adam.

i was looking at those before too, pretty good price considering it looks sweet and is mufflerized...i had it planned out too like addo said, using those wide clamps that do the 360 deg clamp and cost like 10 bucks apiece...i bet u could buy the pipes and clamps for about 100 bucks and do it yourself..the clamps seem to seal pretty good since i have seen many smokestacks put together with them and i dont notice any leak sound. I would get the longest ones u can get...summit sells the patriots for about 260ish bucks for i think a 70" ... i think its the biggest one...i dont have he book here so i cant check, and my internets screwed up and i cant search for stuff...but i think thats right...maybe 72"...but then it should come out right infront of the rear tires..and thats not so bad.

Just nosing around Summit's site... The Walker Dynomax set is about $270 and the Patriots $190-odd. There's another brand for about $600+ in full stainless. Oddly enough, the warrantly on the D-max is 90 days, on the Patriots one year. Pay more, get more "risk". :?

Adam.

A while back (a few years now) Mom looked into putting sidepipes on her '65 Comet Caliente and decided against it because of the climate in that area. She lives a few miles west of Portland OR and you guys have a lot of moisture in the air. The people she talked to convinced her not to put them on because they would attract a lot of moist air when cooling off and would rust faster then normal exhaust..

Of course the people she talked to (or me for that matter) could be full of it, but I thought I would toss it out there..

Yeah I was planning on buying the 60" Patriots (That picture is taken from Summitracing.com) For like $195.

Oh... Since I live in Seattle I'm kinda worried about that rust thing :?

i have the same car you do although mines a bit more modified in the visual department. I have one complaint though, it sounds like a cheap ricer when i give it gas. Anyone know how to get a moderate v-8 sound from it?

its my understanding that exhaust wont come into your car if you dont drive slow......just a thought

Go for it!! Side pipes are cool IMO!!

There used to be someone on the forum that was running sidepipes and I really liked the way it looks! 8) 8) 8)

Later,

Doug

do u guys think we will have enough clearence from the ground i know now that i only have about six inches of clearence now with 13 inch rims

im still waiting for my new cragars to come in

Hey Addo,
I drove mine around for nearly a week open headered with nothing else, lol. It was fun, turned alot of heads and even scared the hoololly out of a Harley rider, lol. Gooooood times, good times.
Matt

I was mostly concerned at like stop lights or idling, or stop and go traffic on the freeway. But I think it should be ok.

The last thing I do is want it to sound like a ricer... Maybe I'll just run straight headers

I'm going to go ahead and purchase them this weekend, so wish me luck and hope I dont FUBAR the install

Dual out headers wont let you sound like rice, period. Definitely the way to go. It will sound mean pretty much no matter what mufflers you use
