Radiator cap pressure

Hi Everyone

Can anyone explain radiator cap pressure and how they effect the cooling system on a 200 six cyl? I think i read on this board that a 1965 Mustang came with a 13lb. I ordered a billet chrome cap from summit and they come as a 16lb., or a 7lb. and i got the 16lb. Will this cause any prob? Thanks for your help.

Doug.

8) as you increase the pressure on your coolant, the boiling point of the coolant rises. take water for example, raise the pressure on a system filed with water by 1 psi, and the boiling point goes up by 3 degrees(iirc), from 212 to 215 degrees. thus if you put a 13lb cap on your cooling system, assuming is is designed for the added pressure, you raise the boiling point of teh coolant by 39 degrees. this is how engines can run at 215 degrees without boiling over.

How about going back to your Profile, and let us know where you call home?

If you live in a cool climate, never drive on hot days, never get stuck in traffic, your system is in good shape, you run 50/50 antifreeze, don't sit there idling with an auto trans, etc., etc., a light pressure cap is OK. If you drive in Atlanta traffic in the summer with a worn out C4, get a 16# with a coolant recovery bottle. No matter which, get a coolant recovery type cap and use the recovery bottle. 8)

Shop for a 3-row radiator, put in a "Summer" thermostat, and add a coolant recovery kit. Also, if you have an automatic, check out the post on transmission fluid coolers. 8)

Heat is the enemy of engines!

After the epsode at the car show I installed a 3 row rad., 160 deg. thermostat and a puller elect fan, all of which helped. This winter I just finished installing a six blade flex fan been to cold to take the car out but from running it in the garage I can tell the fan puts out a heck of a lot more air than the old 4 blade. I will look into the recovery system.
Thanks again for all the help.

Doug.

I had a 6 blade fan with a 2 row rad and it got up there in the hot florida days. Especially on the highway and heavy traffic. I put in a 3 core rad with a 160 thermo stat from discount and it cooled right down with the c4. Then I got ac put in and that would make it heat up just like the old 2 core.I now have 2 electric pusher fans for stop and go on the highway it takes care of its self. Works good
