I ordered and read the falcon hand book. I don't know know that much about engines, but what I read; I got the impression that I have to change out my 3speed and put in a C4 or C5. Plus change out my rear end. IS THIS TRUE. Can some one please help me. I have a 200. What do i need to buy to supe up and make my straight six a champ. Seeking tips. Thanks

Well first off welcome to the board. This is THE authority for Ford 6's. Many people have kept the tranny they had and are happy. Myself, I don't like the non-syncro 1st gear. It isn't that hard to switch to a T-5 if you're not happy with the ?2.70? or change to the 3.03 syncro 3 spd.

People here are polite and happy to help. I suspect if you search you will find many posts about tranny swaps already here.

what about the 3.03 syncro 3 spd. and where can I get it. Is there a big difference. Thanks for the info

It's all in what you want to do. I'm currently running the stock three speed and rearend. with no problems. My current 200 has the trip carb set up and electronic ignition.

I am working on building a much stronger 200 and I do plan on updating to a 5 speed and 8" rear end more for fun than anything else.

Thanks for the info, I would like to change out the 3speed and put in a five speed, but can I keep the rear axle. Or should I change. Reasons why?

There's only a couple of people who've actually broken the factory rear.

Most damage is due to "shock loads" where the gears are worn and no longer mesh as when assembled 40 years ago. The slight bumping as the slack is taken up inside the housing eventually busts something - probably a spider gear.

Run it until it busts - might be ten or twenty years! :)

Regards, Adam.

Until you get above the 140RWHP mark, you're stock rear will be adequate. I have the Aussie head, 390 4V carb, T5 5 speed transmission. I finally ate my old 7.5" rear end. I suspect it was as much due to old age coupled with new power and the fact I drive the mustang hard.

You should be fine with the 7.5" rear end for a long time. Don't replace until you need to or want to, both which seem a ways off for now.

Again, welcome to the board.

Cisco,

Like Adam told you, Run it til it breaks.

I have a well-modified 200 in my '60 Ranchero. Headers, Cam, 350 cfm two barrel, valves, DS II, etc. My brother and I have a G-Tech gauge and we did about 50 0-60 runs to test a few modifications.

I put this in front of a 2.77 non-syncro tranny with a column shift. It lasted about a year. To get it to last that long, I drained and flushed the 2.77 and filled it with new clean (You should have seen the crap that came out of it.) gear lube.

I replaced the 2.77 with a T-5. The reason being - it cost almost the same. You'll need an adapter to get the 3.03 to go to the 2.77 bell. They are about the same price as for a T-5 (IF you can find one). The going price around here (ND) is $75 for a 3.03 three-speed and $80.00 for a four cylinder T-5 5-speed. I needed a new clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing no matter what.

I also kept the 7 1/4 stock rearend with first the 2.77 and now the T-5. After four YEARS and 16,000 of my abusive driving, it now howls loud enough that I don't drive it on the highway without using earplugs (and I still get out of the car saying "Huh? What did you say?" I also bought a four lug 8 inch rear the same week I installed the engine. Insurance.

When I put the 8 inch in this winter, I'll also buy new rear springs. The originals are sagging and allowing a lot of wheel hop power shifting into second gear.

To sum up, I sorry if you were stopped from modifying your engine because of possible drive train upgrades. They are NOT immediately necessay.

Good Luck from 1/2 of the FPH authors

Dennis, did you or David ever do stopwatch 0-60 times with both of your vehicles??

Just interested. William

Yup,

But he's got the notebook and he's not available right now. BG.

We did then when we were switching from 1.08 two-barrels to 1.21 autolites. We are planning on trying Holley 350's and then 500's just to see. We'll do more of the 0-60's then.

Often we do 20 to 60 mph in third gear - because it takes out the variables of launching and shifting.

Cisco,

I haven't jumped into the 8 inch rear end swap because my ranchero rear is a 3.50 to 1 gear ratio. The 8 inch is a 3.0? something. I would like to keep a deeper gear. The 4 cylinder T-5 has a VERY low first gear - you need to shift right away - so the higher gear of the 8 inch shouldn't be a problem, except I like to launch away from stop lights. BG

so, what are you planning to do to it? what are you doing with the parts you plan to be rid of?
I'm interested in your trip carb setup, if you're going to get rid of it.
