Running hot and spitting!

I don't know if anyone remembers me or not, but I had a '64 w/ a BB 200/C5 and the 2V Holley on it. I moved down to corpus christi and lost the use of my father's tools and the internet in the move. Well, I towed the falcon down here but since have been having trouble with it. It runs great after it warms up, spitting very very little. But warming up is horrible. It lacks power until I hit about 40-45, then it loses it again at about 65. Any ideas? I've read a bit and think that the float might be too low, does this sound accurate? Also, there is a screw closer to the base that has a spring on it, about where should this be set. Thanks for any help.

What carb are you running? If it is the H/W what jets are in it?

The screw with the spring is the idle mixture screw. Screw it in, but do not tighten. Back it out about 1 1/2 turns. Start the car, and screw it in and out until you get the fastest/smoothest idle. Reset idle with the idle speed screw.

The carb's coming from Stovebolt do not have the original jetting. Jetting for these carbs has been discussed at length on this forum. Mustangaroo reported the two carbs he bought from Stovebolt came with different jetting, mine came different from his. The procedure to check the size is documented elsewhere but basically you just remove the 3 screws in the top and carefully so as not to mar the gasket lift the top of the carb. The jets are in the bottom of the bowl and screw out with a flat head screwdriver. You also need to know the size of your idle jets, they screw in from the side. Again there is a sizing chart elsewhere. Just do a search for 5200.

Just one caution on using a screwdriver on jets. There is actually a special tool, which I've never used. Make sure you use the largest screwdriver that will fit the slot. A too small screwdriver can slip and damage the jets.

The spitting, sluggishness, and slow warm up can be a lot of things:
The carb can be the prolbem, bad mix, bad carb, trash, etc. The ignition can be a problem - consider electronic ignition conversion (Pertronix), also, it sounds to me that your timing could also be the problem or your vaccum advance.

Good luck!
