- Just a tentative question, so I get an idea of what to start looking for.

Possibly a blow-through setup, but could equally be draw through. About 900cc 4-stroke motor, maximum RPMs maybe 5K, more likely 4K2-4K3. Light boost only. No intercooling planned.

What models of car should I look at, for donors?

Thanks, Adam.

I know in the FSAE shop here they have a itty bity IHI but they got it from IHI directly. I think you will have trouble finding a turbo that small moving that little air. dare I ask what is it goign on?

You know me too well, and are therefore suspicious!

They do make turbos for street bikes, harleys, fourwheelers, and snowmachines. Aerocharger makes some nice small ones that they use as blow throughs on snowmachines...

Spendy little mothers!...youd think the smaller the cheaper...they are twice the amount!

Evan's right. Two main bearings only. That's why I have to be modest with the boost. But consider: If I get a set of headers made, with the "compulsory" Brooklands style muffler, and hunt for the correct brass bodied carb, it will be as many dollars (maybe more) than if I use a 1960s HS-6 carb and a turbo, both adapted to the existing manifold. Better performance, same outlay. Plus a noisy BOV would cause people to die of hysterics.

Are the turbos off three cylinder Suzuki cars no good?

well I think anything small enough will work. I knew a guy making some decent power from a swift so I say go for it

BTW I just sold my last hs6 on ebay last week

look for small Diesel engine turbos, I've got a few around but they all have problems (free from work, just grabbed them out of the scrap bin) alot of them are T2's and T22's and would probibly work well on a 900 cc engine.

Thanks for the pointers! I had been under the impression there was some physical reason diesel turbos didn't go well on non-diesels.

I have seen some cute little turbo's on small Kubota industrial engines, they would be in the correct size range but I have no clue as to why you couldn't run them on gas engines.

Daihatsu Charade Diesel turbo will work best.

It has no seal, so you can't put 24 psi of boost, and call it a 150 hp Singer Super Special

An unsealed turbo will allow a draw through carb to work without destroing the oil supply if it sits at 5 to 6 pounds per sqaure inch.

The best one in the old days was the Rolls Royce Merlin cabin blower for WW2 air craft. Bascially, a supercharger. Old Phil Irving used to run race cars with 1200 cc V-twin Vencient Black Shadow mit blower and a big old HD8 feeding 160 hp of juice to a wild air cooled fire breather.

Try an engine importer for a suzuki cappacino turbo
or one off a Honda City or even a single CT12 from a toyota 1JZGTE twin setup, they would most likley be the cheapest
All are to suit blow through only and all have internal wastegates
