some hose questions

im about to show some pics of hoses that are long and have bolts or screws on the end i either want to make sure these arent important and should be hooked up cause if there not im gonna shorten the length cause it looks like poop...

DSCN4179.jpg

this hose is big and is on a box on the fire wall that has a bunch of smaller hoses it leads to nothing at all and its not blocked off
DSCN4178.jpg

this vacuum lookin doggy here is on the base of the carb and looks important yet it is doin nothing with the hose attached to it
DSCN4177.jpg

i believe this was hooked to the stock carb as what looks to me like a fuel return line or something
DSCN4176.jpg

this is the ugliest lookin one its right up front and the two hoses lead to nowhere..

any help would be apreciated and im not a mechanic so some of my hunches might be funny on the pics lol.

I will give it a shot though pictures are close so can't see the whole area but it looks like the same parts as on my 77 Maverick 250. If you need to hook them up there should be a vacuum diagram on the radiator support header or if its missing I can look at mine for you.

1. This is for the ac & heat box to control doors and valves of the heat, defrost and air systems
2. This for sure is the EGR valve.
3. I this is a hot air pipe that went into the air cleaner, the carb or both.
4. Part of the Emissions control system.

1. Goes to what would be the fuel bowl vent on the carb, if you had one.
2. That is the EGR valve, and the hose goes to vacuum source controlled by a PVS on the thermostat housing.
3. That looks like the heated air from underneath the exhaust manifold, right? It goes to what would normally be a port on the carb up high on the body. It's there to bring some warm air in sooner in cold weather.
4. A vacuum switch that would be hooked up to another ported vacuum "tree", and the carb and/or the distributor.

ok so #1i can just take off without harm?
#2could you send a pic of what its suppost to be hooked up to since it sounds important
#3im not worried about since i have the weber now and will be upgrading to headers
#4it wont hurt anything to just hack that shit off then?

if any of those id like to make sure the egr valve is properly hooked up so ill take any pics i can please

79 250 so it should be close to yours bubba

The EGR valve may have been unhooked because it was failing and causing the engine buck due to vacuum leak. And is the pipe going from the exhaust manifold to the EGR adapter intact? Often these rot and previous owners will just cut them off and pinch the pipe off.

If you are serious about restoring the vacuum system you really need a EVTM for your year and model car.

There are many variations on a theme when it comes to these systems.

as far i see all the stuff is still hooked up even that pipe its toward the rear all is hooked up except that one hose so if i need to worry or not about it im not sure its why im asking for help

I took about 10-12 pictures of all the emissions stuff for you when I brought the camera in to download them seen the memory card was not in it  . :rolflmao:

Can confirm that

3. is hooked to carb top air horn (ex heat).

she runs better but still does a little spudder and some air like a small blow off valve goin off when i drive for a long time and shut her off, any ideas? and im hoping to get rid of some of that extra junk i dont need when i get headers put on.

its hard to see where that hose exactly goes it looks like the old carb hat..i wonder what would happen if i just unplug that hose to make it free???

For the sputter, maybe dumping fuel at shut off, idle too high or carbon build up in the cylinders
EDIT: (drizzling a little ATF down the carb throat while running @high rpm can clear alot of that out...or run some in the fule tank).
Don't know about the air purge, have heard a/c systems do that on occasion if yours is so equipped otherwise just a guess.
Good luck!

cause it looks like poop
Congtats on goin about this methodically. Many just rip everything off cuz they don't like the way "it looks" to them.
Sounds like ur finding what each does AND how (more inportant - it IS a system) they wrk together. Luckly mine's a lill older and don't hafta go thru that, 's tough enuff 4 this lill pea brain as is...
Rootin U on, keep us informed as U go along!

its hard for me to judge the idle speed screw cause i dont have an rpm gauge i have it sound smooth and it dont try to take off when i let off the pedal so im guessing it is cool even when im driving you can hear it suck alot of air. i dont use A/C i hate it im taking it off when i get the headers put on. i can try the ATF in the tank but how much is to much?

Hey Granadastraightsix, drizzling a little ATF down the carb is an old school trick to remove carbon build up in the combustion chamber, valves and pistons. Carbon built up in these areas can soak up fuel and cause 'run-on' or 'dieseling' after the engine is shut off as the fuel absorbed by the carbon build up continuues to burn from heat.

Since yours in a '79 I would probably stick with running it through the tank instead of the carb to avoid any large particles of carbon breaking free at once and clogging your cat, probably no more than a half quart per tank of gas. Others prefer to use just water 'spritzed' or sprayed into the carb throttle opening to clear carbon build up, but again I'd be leary of breaking large chunks free all at once and clogging the catalytic converter. Of course you can also use over the counter products such as Berryman's fuel injector cleaner, Marvels Mystery Oil...and some swear by Techron to acheive same results. Good luck

Well found the memory card for camera so took a few shots hope they will be of some help. You need to look past the dirt, webs, and spiders though to see the parts :hmmm:

pic 1, 3, & 4 didn't come out 4 me. Nice shots tho.
(I'm lucky if I can get them outta my camera/into the 'puter, on-line & to a site would be a challenge).
