Sounds like starter

I turned my car over to start up for first time after installing the header, and when i got the starter on its being pretty loud, kinda sounds like its stuggling, is this the starter or it it the sound that comes from the enigine with open headers???

Starter seems impossible to get positioned wrong at least it seems. What do u guys think?

Is it dragging or turning slow when starting? or noisy after running?

I would think it would be hard to hear much over open headers, but for dragging/slow starting, I'd make sure the battery is well charged, cables are clean and have solid connections (at starter, battery, solenoid, grounds), good clean grounds on the engine as well. A worn or older starter might struggle more with excessive heat...if you notice it to be an issue after running with open headers or are concerned about header heat soaking the starter, you could try putting her in the shade with a fan and cooling the compartment and engine down to see if it starts better. Should be difficult to mount the starter out of positon, but not impossible to miss seating it completely within the block plate hole. Just some ideas...good luck

It sounded like this the first time i turned it over, so heat doesnt seem to be the issue; would not seating it properly cause it to work ia little harder cuz that at least what sounds like to me, my dad thinks the sound is coming from the open headers but some reason i have doubts, it isnt missing or slipping on the teeth. Battery is good, i'll check connections tomorrow. Think i should ttry re-installing the starter again?

I don't think you have a mounting issue, otherwise you'd likely have skipping, slipping, missing on teeth. I'd have to agree with your Dad, and it'd just be hard to deduce normal amount of noise with those open headers running.

If it's sluggish, it's more likely worn battery (exteme temps hot or cold is when they tend to fail or are really taxed), dirty or incomplete connections, or a worn starter (brushes)...something either limiting its ability to not draw enough current (connections) or incapable of drawing sufficient current (batt, starter brushes). You might be able to use an inspection mirror (or small hand held mirror) to check for flush mounting, but I really doubt that's your issue, although never hurts to check. Good luck

Have to see after i get the rest of the exhaust system put on, battery seems fine, 12volts when i turn the ignition on without the car running, maybe brushes just wasnt sure if they all of a sudden 'go'. Would be odd for it to be anything electrical seeing how i changed nothing and never any problems. Could be coming from the open headers, I'll give an update within a few days, should have the rest of exhaust system on by then.

Well, its all good, loosened off the starter, give it a little wiggle then tightened it back down and today i turned it over and the starter is back to its quiet old self, I guess it wasnt seated properly.
