Speedometer Gears

This is a long shot, because I haven’t even had any luck with my extremely-common Camaro-and-Muncie combination, but is there a good source for speedometer gears that might match an S10 T5 or Toploader overdrive with the stock speedo in my Futura?

I'm sure Mustangs Unlimited, Summit, or any of the other big suppliers will have the right gear for you. The T-5 takes the same gear and cable as all other Ford manual transmissions. Really the only variables are what rear-end ratio you have and the height of your rear tires. There are plenty of "speedometer calibration" websites that will tell you how many gear teeth you need for your particular tire size and rear end ratio. (y)

Modern Driveline carries a wide assortment of Speedo cables and conversions as well as Speedo gears for the T5's : V8, L4, and S10 tailhousings.

Just ordered a Cable and Gear for my upcoming conversion. Just tell 'em what trans, rear gear, and tire size you have...they'll set you up.

The T-5 takes the same gear and cable as all other Ford manual transmissions

Actually Ford 4 speed manual transmissions use a driven gear that is opposite cut from Ford 3 speed manual transmissions. The T-5 uses the same cut gear as the 3 speed transmissions.

Yeah , be careful out there. Speedo gears are Ford family specific. Plug the Speedo 2.77 gear in a Toploader and besides no speedo, the gear will be toast - but probably no real damage done .


Toploaders and T5's and from what I read - C4's, use same gear. I have a selection of the gears sold by multiple vendors. Depending on Tranny Speedo gear, OD ratio, Rear Axle ratio and tire size , several "Optimum" gears can be figured. T5's also used three different speedo drive gears which are ID'd by their Color.

I just put an '84 non-world class NWC T5 in place of a 90's Cobra/Z-T5 and needed to change the 23 to 19 tooth gear as Speedo read UNDER - closest available gear is 20 which is as close as speedo anyway..., here's why:

I'm confused. :? Which gear works with a T5?

I'm ready to hook up my '61 Ranchero, and the existing cable was on the original automatic. I assume it's the same gear as for a 2.77 3-speed, but maybe not. Does anyone know for sure?

Also, on all of these variations, is it just the gear that is different, or is there a difference in the cable end as well? The diameter seems to fit, but is there any difference in depth?

Thanks for any clarification.
