splitting exhaust manifold

Was just complaining to a friend about the cost of headers for a 250. He mentioned cutting and splitting the manifold. There's a guy in town that does this on Chevys and might be able to do the same for mine for like a 1/4 of the price and run dual exhausts.

Can this be done?
is it worth it?
pro vs. cons?
cam is Schneiders .435/.450 lift 262/282 @ .05 210/220

will it flow well enough with that cam?

Howdy Back Slick:

It has been done and some swear by the unique sound. I doubt that it does anything for performance.

The problem with splitting the small Ford six exhaust manifold, unlike Chevys, is that there is no good, easy way to split the center siamized 3/4 exhaust port into the manifold. And the manifold outlet is directly below this center chamber.

The ones I've seen are split between 4 and 5. That leaves 1, 2, 3, & 4 emptying into the stock location. Then 5 & 6 get a new bung for the second outlet.

A split stock exhaust manifold will certainly not compliment your cam selection. At best, splitting the stock manifold is for the low, slow and loud crowd. Performance gain would be slight, if any at all. It will sound cool, in a 50's sort of way.

When it comes to performance there is no real subistitute for a header. Sorry! Not what you wanted to hear!

Adios, David

I have a related question.

I'm helping put together a 62 S-22 Comet for my girlfriend. I'm a big fan of dual exhaust for esthetic reasons as well as for increased performance, which would probably be minimal in this case. Anyway, I was planning on keeping the stock manifold and running a Y-pipe from there. However, I recently found a true dual header for the 170 block which the guy wants $150 for. The block is otherwise stock, so is the performance gain -- if any -- worth the added cost over simply running a Y-pipe off the stock manifold?

Thanks in advance.

a true dual exhaust headder will sound better and flow better but the small 6's, the intake is where they suffer, so a headder would sound better, but not do much for performance.
