Starter question

I have a question about starter motors. I was at the picknpull today and got myself a starter for my 250 engine which I am in the process of putting into my 65 mustang. The starter is out of an automatic transmissioned car with a 5.0 motor and I was just wondering if it would affect anything. Reason i am asking is that I was looking at the Summit catalogue and it had a starter that said for automatics only. (why?) Is it specifically made for auto's only and not for manual trans? And that got me thinking the starter I got today may not work because my mustang is a manual car.

Thanks in advance for the input!

Yes the noise is different.... and the depth it ingages .. the Flex plate for an automatic sets different in the bell than a fly wheel. So the starter you got isn't going to work for your standard tranny..

:D If you have a good starter/alternator shop handy.you can get a correct nose for about $5.00.At least thats what they cost around here, and it will have a new bushing installed too.

I got the starter for a really good deal, and I guess I might as well get a remanufactured starter at autozone. I'll use the one i got as a core, save myself $10 for the core charge.

Would it make any difference if I was using a v8 flywheel and a t5 transmission? Would it allow my starter to work?

You need a 157 tooth zero balance flywheel if building a 250 manual; many V-8 ones will be 28 or 50 ounce imbalance.

Your profile says nothing about where you're located. Nobody's going to spam you if you fill it in some more... In fact, they might even be able to suggest a local shop that can help with just a rebushed nosepiece as Leo surmised.

:D I have posted this tip before, but here it is again.
This is from the people that own the local alternator/starter/generator shop.
From appx early 60`s on,ALL of the starter MOTORS were the same.Wether for a 144 or a 460.The only differences were the nose cone and the Bendix. Those had to be matched up for stick or auto tranny and the number of teeth on the flywheel/flexplate.

leo... i was thinking starters for the f-e motors were smaller and would clear headers easier. let me know if i am mistaken. thanks i am getting ready to buy one for my 200.
