Steel-to-cast, or Cast-to-cast?

I was discussing Jack's pseudo-ME log head conversion ideas with someone the other day and they opined that it may be better to cast the new flange and weld it on, rather than mill it out of plate. Same thickness and all, but it was their considered reckoning that cast would be preferable.

Any comments?

8) i am not sure which would be better to be honest. personally i think milling one would be easier, but not easily duplicatable unless you set up a cnc program. i think milling would also be more accurate as well.
