Straight cut gear drive?

Ive seen these in street machine for 250 crossflow and wondering the advantages of such a device. Im assuming timing would always be the same and it would prob make a wicked noise. Wouldnt something like this take more engine power to turn though compared to, say, a twin chain setup?

Can they be fitted with no mods to waterpump etc?

Are they available as single a dual or is this only for v8's?

Thankyou,
Pete

I think they're single idler setups. The noise from my experience (the JP red motor set) isn't as loud as you might think. No loss of power at all. Some minor machining may be required to fit 'em. Buickroadster knows a place in Melbourne that makes custom gear drives, also as I said JP and possibly Streetmaster (Rollmaster?) do them. Coarser teeth make more noise.

Gear drives impart marginally more shock loads to the engine as there is no cushioning effect of the chain. This possibly could result in (longer term) wear acceleration on the dizzy or rockers.

Cheers, Adam.

the main advantage is that they have no variation in cam timing and once the camshaft is dialed in, it will never change provided the gears arent worn - a chain can flex and relax causing cam timing variation. they do put small amounts of extra stress on the front cam bearing and the front of the camshaft. the noise is created by the physical relationship between two opposing straight type toothed gears. some ppl like it, others dont. imo it's an awesome note but u can fit them and "bed in" the gears so they will run almost silent.

the reverse gear in 99% of manuals is a straight cut variety as well and thats why it "wurrs" when u give it shit or a bit of speed in reverse.

hope that helps :)
