These little motors do hold 5 qts of oil, don't they

Did my first oil change on the new motor (and my first 200), five qts with a Phram PH8A filter and it shows a half qt + overfull.

Anyone?

I use 5 quarts. Looks good on my dipstick. Maybe you have the wrong stick? Are there any dents in the oil pan?

My '66 manual says '170 and 200 six - U.S. Measure 4.5 quarts (includes one U.S. quart for filter replacement)'
but I think more than a few folks run 5 w/o issue.

Steve, if that extra 1/2 quart bothers you try using Fram filter PH977A...it's bigger and will hold that extra 1/2 quart of oil. Of course, they cost twice as much as the PH8A does. I run the PH977A myself so I can use the full 5 qts.

Why in the world would you not use a Motorcraft FL-1A? 3 bucks, extended capacity, and doesn't have Fram's legendary quality issues.

I know everybody has an opinion on oil filters, but after seeing the cutaway views of both, there is really no comparison. But, whatever makes you happy I suppose.

Run a FL-299 motorcraft if you want to use 5 quarts of oil. $13.00
Run a FL-1A of you want to use 4.5 quarts. $3.00
DO NOT OVER FILL.
It can cause oil foaming & a loss of power. Bill

Thanks. I think I'll do a filter swap to get rid of the overfull condition. Probably go with a less legendary  brand while I'm at it.

8) teh factory spec is 4.5qt with filter, but with these old motors a 1/2qt more is not going to hurt things at all. if you are getting oil foaming due to an extra 1/2qt on these engines, you have an internal issue that needs to be dealt with today.

Thing to remember about Fram, you are paying for all the advertising and fancy orange paint. Only nice part about Fram is the grip surface on the bottom of the filter. I do use Fram on my truck, but that's only because the filter is in the most assinine place in the work that no filter wrench/strap/etc can ever get to and the extra grip makes it possible to get off without just sticking a screwdriver in it (which I've done many times). I also haven't bothered changing the oil or filter in that hunk of junk in 2 years.

Otherwise, I use motorcraft for everything else.

4.5 quarts, but 5 shouldn't cause major issues

with my e0 block and heads, with a new replacement pan and the good ol' fl-1a (for used that for just about everything) and mobile 1 i would use 5 and it would be just a smidge above the full mark.

I never bothered with the larger filter.
