Timing Problems

I recently ordered a new carb from Pony Carbs (autolite 1100) b/c the old one was completely shot. As per Pony Carb's instructions, I tuned the engine by "ear" (moving the dizzy 'till it sounded its best and backing it off to get rid of pinging, etc...). However, I've noticed that what I thought was the sweet spot really wasn't.
You see, in the morning, the engine's a real bear coming off the line and even a little smokey. I figured if I advanced it just a bit it would fix the situation (it did), but then I'm left with the problem of engine knocking. It seems the spot between knocking and smoking is so fine, that the correct spot doesn't exist. I don't understand why this would be an issue seeing as I didn't have this problem before I put the new carb on (and I am very hesitant to adjust the carb at all). Any ideas?

Adjusting your timing shouldn't have anything to do with the engine smoking. Give more detail on that. What color, how much, when, etc...

Hope this helps.
Run the engine till it up to temp.
Using you dwell meter, check the following.
a} RPM of the engine. Adjust to your manual {550-575rpm}
b} Air mixture in your carb. Watch your dwell meter and
turn your mixture screw on your carb IN until the engine
starts to stall. Then screw it OUT until you get the
highest RPM.
With your timing light attached check.
a}Timing {Auto 12deg, Manual 8deg}
b} Dwell {35-38deg}
Check your points {0.024-0.026}
Depending on the miles on your car, you'll have to do some minor adjustments to your timing...ZZ
