I called the transmission service down the road and asked for a price on a C4 rebuild and they qouted me $1200 .... .... yea $1200 ... dont get me wrong I want my car back and I have the money but what should I do ... I am almost sure its the tranny but not enough to spend over 1K on 90% chance .... basicallly is this a good price ??? is this the next logicall step in my processs ??? could this fix the hesitation problem ???

PS Yall are some great help ....

Autozone… $399. You must have an equivelant out there. Punch up Autozone auto parts and see what is availble to you out there.

$1200 will get you a nice street/strip set-up. Probably not what you need or looking for.

Last summer I had mine rebuilt. I called around for a carried-it quote: most were in the 500-700 range, but I did find a place nearby that said he specialized in classic automatics like the C4. He quoted me 300 minus any converter problems (which of course I did have and needed to get replaced. Took about two days, most of the last day was letting the steel-colored engine enamel to dry.

Shop around. C4's are easy to work on for professionals.

Yeah I was thinking that $1200 was way way to much ... I dont konw about rebuilding myself becuase to me $300 to get it done the right way is worth it ... ok sooo the general response is look around for a cheaper overhual :?: :?: :?:

Now is the $1200.00 just for a rebuilt tranny or are you dropping the car off at their shop and they get to drop the tranny, rebuild it and reinstall it??

If its just a rebuilt tranny for $1200 then forget it, if they are installing it too then that is an allright price in my book! :D

Later,

Doug

We have local Transmission shops here that will pull the trans and rebuild and re-install for $600.00......I'd shop around  The extra noise you could not discribe may be universal joints going bad? Better check them before you drop a drive line :?

8) i would say that before you spend the money for an overhaul, have the trans flushed first. it might be that old trans fluid, and the attendant varnish that accumulates from sitting so long is a part of your problem.

Mustangaroo raises a good point. To take it a step further, fitting a tailshaft loop is always good safe practice.

I personally feel $1200 is a little too high unless the rebuild uses all new brand name parts, plus a Transgo Stage I shift kit, includes remove/replace and first service (usually just a nip on the bands and kickdown cable).

The reason for my opinion is that $1200 equals $1600 Aussie and that is what we would pay - in a country that charges $335 for Optima batteries. It's all relative.

Ok well Im goin to see if i can find a lift to raise it up to make it a little easier to work on and drain the fluids and see if that makes a differnce ... the main question is do yall think this will help the lunging problem ...

PS

Im in Cary NC

I had mine rebuilt about 5 years ago..

$750.00 USD dropped the car off, picked up 3 days later. and they reworked the valve body while they were in there.

I have to agree with Funky Cricket and Doug-
I had my C4 rebuilt by a local shop in the San Francisco Bay Area- $1000 -and spent another 100 to have them fabricate new steel lines and another 100 to get a new case (mine was cracked). That included them installing and testing the tranny afterwards. Things can be a littel pricey out here but I think the figure you were quoted is not terribly unreasonable, especailly if it is a local shop that you'd like to support. Good Luck!

It's very hard to say. Someone with more years driving, might describe the symptoms differently. That could even be a carburetion or throttle linkage issue.

For a 1200 dollar rebuild they will almost certainly take your car for a test drive before you committ to the work- they can tell a lot just by listening and feeling the transmission. At my shop, I had to wait until Tino came in the next day, but Tino was worth the wait- he had been rebuilding transmissions for 40 years and he knew all about the old C4s. I'd suggest you have them drive it around the block and let them tell you if THEY think it is a tranny issue. For that kind of money you are paying for that kind of excellent service.
Just my 2 cents-
Good Luck!

Ok ... Ill let yall konw how this goes ... god help me ...
